## Özet

Experts state that there are factors to consider before and after orthodontic treatment for its successful progression.

Asst. Prof. Bora Aysan, an Orthodontics Specialist, stated that pain and tooth sensitivity observed in the first days after treatment are normal, adding, “However, if the pain is very severe, lasts longer than a week, or a different problem such as a wire poking occurs, an orthodontics specialist should be consulted without delay.”

## İçerik

Asst. Prof. Aysan emphasized that, contrary to popular belief, there is no strong scientific evidence that wisdom teeth cause crowding in the front teeth. He stated that impacted teeth are recommended to be extracted only in certain situations. Asst. Prof. Aysan warned that hard and sticky foods can damage brackets, and hard fruits and vegetables should be consumed by breaking them into small pieces instead of biting directly.

Asst. Prof. Bora Aysan, an Orthodontics Specialist at Üsküdar University Dental Hospital, provided information and made important warnings about pain and sensitivity during orthodontic treatment, the evaluation of impacted wisdom teeth, and common misconceptions regarding nutritional rules.

**Pain and sensitivity are normal in the first days after orthodontic wires are placed!**

Asst. Prof. Bora Aysan stated that experiencing mild to moderate pain and tooth sensitivity in the first few days after starting orthodontic treatment is completely normal, adding, “Pain usually begins within the first 24 hours and reaches its peak on the second and third days.”

Asst. Prof. Aysan reported that in most patients, pain significantly decreases within 5-7 days. He said, “During this period, consuming soft foods and avoiding hard foods helps reduce the sensitivity. However, if the pain is very severe, lasts longer than a week, or a different problem such as a wire poking occurs, an orthodontics specialist should be consulted without delay.”

**Wisdom teeth do not cause crowding in the front teeth!**

Pointing out that impacted teeth are one of the issues that need to be evaluated in orthodontic treatment planning, Asst. Prof. Aysan said, “Especially wisdom teeth are examined in detail before treatment. However, contrary to common belief in society, there is no strong scientific evidence that wisdom teeth cause crowding in the front teeth.”

Asst. Prof. Aysan explained, “On the other hand, if an impacted tooth is damaging an adjacent tooth, causing infection, or hindering orthodontic tooth movements, its extraction may be recommended. The orthodontics specialist decides whether extraction is necessary based on a clinical examination and panoramic X-ray evaluation conducted before or during treatment.”

**Attention to nutritional rules is essential for the success of orthodontic treatment!**

Asst. Prof. Bora Aysan emphasized that avoiding certain foods during orthodontic treatment will both prevent damage to the brackets and contribute to the completion of the treatment within the planned period. He said, “Especially hard foods like hazelnuts, almonds, hard candy, and ice should not be chewed. Sticky foods such as caramel and Turkish delight can cause brackets to dislodge. Additionally, very crunchy foods like chips and popcorn are recommended to be consumed carefully.”

Asst. Prof. Aysan underlined that it is safer to consume hard foods like apples, carrots, and plums—a popular summer fruit—by breaking them into small pieces instead of biting directly, concluding his words as follows:

“By adhering to these simple nutritional rules, the risk of damage to brackets is reduced, and orthodontic treatment is helped to progress smoothly and as planned.”
