Uskudar University NP Feneryolu Medical Center Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya stated that suicide is a very important public health problem that causes more than 800 thousand people to lose their lives every year. ## **Suicidal thoughts are related to hopelessness and pain** Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya said, “In our country, approximately 32 thousand people have lost their lives due to suicide in the last 10 years, and 3,406 people in 2019. Suicidal behavior is a multifactorial event with genetic, biological, social, and societal aspects. Suicidal thoughts can emerge in individuals from all sociocultural levels and with all kinds of beliefs. Suicidal thoughts are related to the hopelessness and pain experienced by the person. The person feels so hopeless that complete annihilation, like death, may seem like hope to them. For individuals who believe their suffering will not end and cannot be remedied, suicidal thoughts may eventually turn into a suicide plan and attempt.” ## **People who say they want to die should be taken seriously** “Detecting signs indicating an individual may commit suicide or is prone to suicide plays a key role in preventing suicide,” said Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya, adding: “If a person talks about wanting to die and escaping their pain, researches suicide methods like firearms, toxic/chemical substances online or from their surroundings, distributes their valuable possessions, leaves a will, and says goodbye to those around them, withdraws into themselves, isolates themselves, talks about becoming a burden to others, exhibits angry behaviors, talks about hopelessness or having no reason to live, or engages in risky behaviors that endanger their life, it should be considered that they are prone to suicide with the thought of ending their suffering.” ## **The most common cause: depression** Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya noted that the vast majority of people who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental illness, and warned, “Depression is the most common cause of completed suicides. Bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, psychosis, and personality disorders are also other mental illnesses that can be observed in individuals who attempt suicide. Anxiety disorders accompanied by depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders also carry significant risk for suicidal behavior. Suicidal behaviors can also be observed in the presence of painful and chronic physical illnesses such as cancer, stroke, and loss of organ and function.” ## **Attention to adolescence and old age periods!** Evaluating suicidal behaviors in terms of gender, Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya stated that suicide attempts are higher in women, “However, deaths due to suicide are higher in men because men use more lethal suicide methods. Suicide rates are higher during adolescence and old age. Individuals who experience job loss, or migrate from rural to urban areas or to a different country or region, have a higher risk of suicide. Suicidal behavior is observed at higher rates in some professions (farmers, law enforcement officers, military personnel, doctors, veterinarians, nurses) compared to other professions. Easy access to suicide means, high job stress, professional isolation, and reluctance to seek help are among the important reasons that increase suicide risk.” ## **Everyone who talks about suicide should be taken seriously** Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya stated that there are some misconceptions about suicide in society, which are thought to be true, and said, “For example, it is thought that someone who talks about committing suicide will not actually commit suicide. However, many people who attempt suicide have given signals before, so everyone who talks about killing themselves, openly or implicitly, should be taken seriously and immediate action should be taken. Or it is believed that someone who has decided to commit suicide can never be stopped. But we know that many people who contemplate suicide actually just want to end their pain. This desire, no matter how strong, is temporary. The fact that a person is alive shows that there are still things holding them back, and if they have shared this with someone, it means they are asking for help and something can be done. The calls for help from people expressing suicidal thoughts should be heeded. They should be encouraged to apply to mental health centers as soon as possible to help them cope with this problem.” ## **Suicide news should be reported carefully** Emphasizing that having a mental illness is an important risk factor for suicide, Dr. Lecturer Dilek Sarıkaya gave the following recommendations: “Early detection of mental illnesses and access to appropriate treatment for individuals at risk of suicide are important. Societal prejudices related to mental illnesses and suicide prevent individuals with suicidal thoughts from accessing appropriate mental health services. It should be everyone's responsibility to be aware of our own prejudices regarding suicide and mental illnesses, to educate and develop ourselves and those around us on this issue, to learn about situations where the risk of suicide increases, and to direct our loved ones to appropriate services when we observe this risk. The media and media professionals also have important duties in preventing suicide. Detailed coverage of suicide news in the media, dramatization, and presenting suicide as a normal reaction to crisis situations negatively affect individuals at high risk of suicide. Suicide news should be avoided in the media as much as possible; if it must be reported, it should be done in the simplest possible way, without creating an encouraging effect, and the aim should be to direct individuals with suicidal thoughts to appropriate services.” --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/suicide-warning-signs-must-be-read-correctly*
