## Özet
Experts state that old age is not merely a period of physical changes, but an important life stage where an individual re-evaluates their roles and relationships in life.
## İçerik
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel, emphasizing that families should not take away the tasks their elderly relatives can do when supporting them, said, “Constantly doing tasks for elderly individuals that they are capable of doing themselves can, over time, reinforce the thought of ‘I can't do anything anymore.’ ” Tunçel, highlighting the importance of making decisions with the elderly individual rather than for them, also stated that maintaining social life supports psychological well-being. Tunçel, also stating that overly protective and infantilizing communication should be avoided, noted that the most important support is to be by the elderly individual's side, trusting in their capabilities.
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel of Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements within the scope of October 1st International Day of Older Persons regarding the importance of protecting the independence, decision-making, and social participation rights of elderly relatives for psychological well-being when families support them.
**Old age is not only a physical, but also a psychological period of change!**
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel, stating that aging is not just a period of physical changes, said, “It is an important life stage where an individual re-evaluates their life, roles, relationships, and self-perception.”
Tunçel pointed out that retirement, loss of a spouse or friend, children leaving home, changes in physical capacity, or needing support in certain areas of daily life can affect an individual's psychological world. She stated, “During this period, individuals may develop thoughts such as ‘I can't do as much as I used to,’ ‘my role in life has changed,’ or ‘I am a burden to others.’ Especially in situations where losses increase and the social circle narrows, feelings of loneliness, sadness, anxiety, worthlessness, and helplessness can be observed. However, old age should not be defined solely by problems. Many individuals can also develop greater acceptance, emotional maturity, and the ability to give meaning to their lives by drawing on their life experiences during this period.”
**Doing Everything for Them Can Strengthen Feelings of Inadequacy! **
Tunçel emphasized that in the ‘Don't tire yourself, I'll do it’ approach, one must distinguish between intent and the effect of the behavior. She said, “These words are often spoken with love and protective intent. However, constantly doing tasks for elderly individuals that they are capable of doing themselves can, over time, reinforce the thought of ‘I can't do anything anymore.’ ”
Tunçel reminded that the feeling of independence is one of the important parts of an individual's psychological well-being. She stated, “Therefore, it is necessary to provide support in areas where they genuinely need help, but not to take over tasks they are capable of doing themselves. For example, instead of saying ‘Let me do it,’ an approach like ‘we can do it together if you like’ protects both the support and the individual's sense of competence.”
**Aging Does Not Abolish an Individual's Right to Make Decisions!**
늬
Tunçel, pointing out that an individual's right to make decisions does not automatically transfer to others as they age, said the following:
“It is very important for an individual to be asked for their opinion on matters related to their own life and to be included in decision-making processes as much as possible, so they feel valued and respected. Constantly making decisions for the individual can increase feelings of worthlessness, resentment, anger, withdrawal, and helplessness. Over time, individuals may feel their thoughts are not valued and withdraw from family communication. The fundamental approach here should not be ‘making decisions for them,’ but ‘making decisions with them.’ Of course, in special situations where an individual's cognitive capacity affects their ability to make certain decisions, professional evaluation may be necessary. However, aging alone does not abolish an individual's right to make decisions.”
**Elderly Individuals Should Be Seen Not as Care Recipients, But as Active Members of Family and Social Life!**
Tuğçe Tunçel noted that loneliness can have a significant impact on psychological well-being, especially when an individual is unwillingly distanced from their social relationships. She said, “Reduced social contact can be associated with sadness, anxiety, withdrawal, and a decrease in life enjoyment.”
Therefore, Tunçel emphasized that the role of families should not be limited to meeting only physical needs. She explained, “Support should also be provided for elderly individuals to maintain their social lives. Eating together, conversing, going for walks, facilitating meetings with friends, or supporting their participation in activities they are interested in is very valuable. The important thing here is to see the elderly individual not constantly as a ‘care recipient,’ but as an active member of family and social life. Sometimes, a regular and sincere conversation can provide much greater psychological support than material or physical aid.”
**It's Not About Living the Life of the Elderly Individual, But Being There for Them to Maintain Their Independence! **
Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel offered suggestions on what kind of communication and behavior families should adopt to protect the independence of their elderly relatives when supporting them. She said, “First, instead of assuming what the elderly individual needs, it is necessary to ask. Phrases like ‘What do you need?’, ‘Would you like to do this yourself?’, ‘How can I support you if you wish?’ ensure healthier communication.”
Tunçel stated that families should allow individuals to do as much as they can themselves, and concluded her remarks as follows:
“Support should be offered where needed. Furthermore, infantilizing, condescending, or overly protective communication should be avoided. When speaking with an elderly individual, a natural and respectful language should be used, as if communicating with an adult, instead of speaking loudly, excessively slowly, or as if speaking to a child. In fact, the basic principle is quite simple: it is not about living the life of the elderly individual, but being by their side so they can lead their own life as independently as possible.
Old age is not a period where an individual's value and right to speak diminish. On the contrary, it is a period when a person's life experience, preferences, and presence within the family should be made more visible. Sometimes the greatest support is not doing things for them, but trusting in their ability and making them feel that we are there for them.’ ”
