## Özet

Those with lumbar disc herniation should exercise correctly and regularly

## İçerik

Experts state that not every back pain is caused by disc herniation, and not every disc herniation causes pain. Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal, emphasizing that all properly performed sports have positive effects on general body health and disc herniation, said, “Swimming is as beneficial as any other sport, but contrary to popular belief, it makes no difference in preventing disc herniation. A person with disc herniation or who has undergone disc herniation surgery must definitely have sports in their life.”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal evaluated the relationship between swimming and disc herniation.

The Inevitable Result of Aging: Lumbar Disc Herniation

Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal stated that lumbar disc herniation is a condition that occurs as a result of the deterioration of cartilaginous tissues called discs, located between the spinal bones, due to various reasons, and their displacement towards the spinal cord. He said, “As we age, just as wear and tear occurs in every tissue in our body, wear and tear and deterioration also occur in the discs. For this reason, contrary to popular belief, lumbar disc herniation is not a disease but an inevitable and natural consequence of aging. Lumbar disc herniation becomes a disease when it starts to compress the nerves emerging from the spinal cord or causes pain.” Ünal stated that not every back pain is caused by lumbar disc herniation, adding, “There is no rule that every lumbar disc herniation will cause pain. Therefore, a person experiencing persistent back pain should be examined by a neurosurgeon to investigate whether the pain is caused by lumbar disc herniation and to arrange treatment accordingly.”

Swimming Works All Muscle Groups Simultaneously

Addressing the question of whether swimming is good for lumbar disc herniation, Op. Dr. Emre Ünal said, “It is an undeniable fact that not only swimming but all properly performed sports have positive effects on general body health and lumbar disc herniation. However, it is necessary to point out one thing: we are talking about 'properly performed' sports. Swimming is a complete sport that works almost all muscle groups in our body simultaneously, not only strengthening muscles but also engaging our cardiovascular system at the same time. However, swimming also has its difficulties. Unless you live in a detached house with a pool, it is not possible to do it at home. You must go to a nearby facility. Since showering before and after swimming is mandatory at these facilities, additional time must be allocated for this routine.”

Swimming in Cold Seasons Can Cause Back Pain

Emphasizing that it is a difficult sport to do, especially in cold weather, in our country which experiences four seasons, Ünal said, “Even if one goes to an indoor pool, not being able to protect oneself from the cold after leaving the pool can cause back pain and flu-like infections. For swimming to be beneficial for general health, it must be done for at least 10 minutes, without interruption, with correct posture and rhythm. How many people in society can swim for 10 minutes non-stop with correct posture? In an article published in the European Spine Journal in 2016, competitive swimmers were compared with 200 people who did not exercise at all, and no significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding lumbar disc herniation development. Considering all these, swimming appears to be a demanding sport both in terms of time and physical effort. On the other hand, when compared to other sports, it turns out that it does not provide any additional benefit for lumbar disc herniation.”

Swimming is Beneficial but Makes No Difference in Preventing Herniation Formation

Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal reiterated that all properly performed sports are beneficial for general body health, stating, “Swimming is as beneficial as any other sport, but contrary to popular belief, it makes no difference in preventing lumbar disc herniation. For a person to exercise regularly, they must enjoy the sport and be able to allocate sufficient time. Otherwise, continuity cannot be ensured.” Ünal concluded his words as follows:

“A person with lumbar disc herniation or who has undergone lumbar disc herniation surgery must definitely have sports in their life. However, there is no obligation for this sport to be swimming. The individual should decide which sport to do according to their time and personal preferences.”
