The Ümraniye Book Fair, held at the Santral Event Area, opened its doors to book lovers for the 5th time this year with the theme 'It's Book Time'. More than 100 publishing houses participated in the fair, and over 200 authors met with their readers over 9 days.

Author Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also met with his readers within this scope. In the interview, moderated by journalist Şaban Özdemir, Tarhan made important remarks under the title "Psychology Talks".

## **“Suicide and addiction are increasing the most” **

Emphasizing the global increase in evil, Tarhan drew attention to the deterioration of moral norms. Tarhan said; “Suicide and addiction are increasing the most. There are increases in society; crime is increasing, violence is increasing. There is a deterioration in moral norms in society. There is an increase in evil. This situation has become both visible and proportionally increased. This is not just in Turkey but a global situation. This is the biggest danger facing humanity right now. That is, the deterioration of moral norms, the increase of evil. Evil is increasing. With the increase of evil, people lose peace. Trust is breaking down, and suicide is increasing, failures are increasing, incidents of violence are increasing. There is a global crisis in this way.”

## **“The greatest erosion of values is in feelings of compassion” **

Tarhan also stated that there is an erosion in feelings of respect and compassion; “The feeling of compassion among people has decreased. Where the feeling of compassion decreases, a lack of empathy emerges. People begin to feel isolated. They become isolated, and trust weakens among people. Family is a haven of trust. When the trust relationship among people in a family deteriorates, it loses its characteristic as a refuge. The greatest erosion of values is in feelings of compassion and respect. Another erosion is experienced in the feeling of respect. The number of people whose respect for each other is more rough, more cruel, and who do not care about the rights and laws of others is increasing. The decrease in respect and the decrease in the feeling of compassion are the values that are eroded, leading to the increase of many evils. These two characteristics are increasing globally.”

## **“Where there is arrogance, people’s sense of entitlement becomes self-directed” **

Tarhan emphasized the connection between the weakening of conscientious norms and evil; “Until recently, our culture protected the family, but now, globally, the protectiveness of the family has weakened. That is, there are legal, social, and conscientious norms that protect society. Legal norms are laws and rules. Second are social norms, which are traditions. Not a crime by law, but people used to respect the rights of others. This has weakened considerably now. Third, moral norms have weakened. Conscience determines moral norms. Examples include the weakening of the sense of conscience, the weakening of compassion, and the weakening of the feeling of shame. This leads to weakening in social society. The reason for the current increase in mental breakdowns and evils is these, their weakening. Selfishness is increasing. Where selfishness increases, arrogance emerges. Where there is arrogance, people’s sense of entitlement becomes self-directed.”

## **“The virus is clear: hedonism…”**

Tarhan stated that people chose to pursue pleasure as their life's purpose; “With the increase of egocentrism, empathy decreases. Lack of empathy emerges, compassion decreases, and evils increase. That is, the feeling of mutual aid disappears in people. The increase of these leads to the increase of many diseases, especially depression. Currently, there is an increase in depression in America. With such a high level of prosperity, why is this depression increasing? They are researching if there is a virus. Actually, the virus is clear, the hedonism virus... People chose to pursue pleasure as their reason for living. That is, they chose to pursue pleasure as an ego ideal. The criterion of 'What I like is good, what I don't like is bad. What serves my interest is good, what doesn't serve my interest is bad.' has changed. Social norms and measures have changed. In Germany, a couple over 70 years old turn on the gas and commit suicide. They left a note before committing suicide. The reason written is, 'No one has knocked on our door except the concierge for three and a half months.' Currently, the biggest problem in the West is loneliness. All of these lead people to unhappiness. Happiness cannot be bought with money. Joy cannot be bought with money. Therefore, when the diagnosis is wrong, the treatment is also wrong. In an environment where materialism has become so widespread, humanity has lost its meaning.”

## **“The younger generation embraces innovation better”**

Tarhan expressed his hope for Generation Z; “Currently, the new generation values family. New generations question and want to develop. The youth criticized as Generation Z, I am very hopeful about them. They seem a bit conformist and too self-absorbed, but they have a search for justice, a search for innocence. They are open to innovation, they question. They will change us. They are the saviors. Our generations are a bit static. That is why the younger generation embraces innovation better.”

## **“Spending too much time in the dark causes seasonal depression”**

Tarhan touched upon the importance of light for one's mood; “Spending too much time in the dark causes seasonal depression. This condition is observed in those who are predisposed, it doesn't happen to everyone. Some individuals have a genetic predisposition and become depressed; their solution is light therapy. White light negatively affects the brain. If one sleeps with the TV on at night, the brain cannot secrete melatonin. When there is deep darkness, the brain secretes melatonin. Melatonin is called neuroprotective; it is a protector of the brain. It both induces sleep and repairs the brain. That is why night sleep is the gold standard, very important. Today's youth go to bed late and wake up late, night and day have become mixed up…” he said.

## **“The greatest gift to give a child is to spend time with them”**

Tarhan advised parents to spend enough time with their children and be companions on their life journey; “The greatest gift a parent can give a child is their time. Spending time together, conversing. Being a companion on life's path. That is, not correcting the child by confronting them, but walking alongside them. When we do this, we raise such wonderful children that they feel both part of the family and free. This child, rest assured, will be a child who endures life's difficulties. They will be a child who says 'this is my opinion'. They will be a child who achieves what they set out to do but respects their parents. They will respect family values. It is not difficult at all to raise them this way, but it requires thought. All this concise information will be very useful. Use it.”

## **“The psychological equivalent of stubbornness is cognitive rigidity”**

Tarhan touched upon mental flexibility and three types of stress; “The psychological equivalent of stubbornness is cognitive rigidity. The most stubborn people are selfish people. They cannot achieve mental flexibility. For example, what is the formula for our muscles to be good? Isn't it for the muscles to be flexible and relaxed? The more flexible our muscles and body are, the healthier we are. The same applies to our soul. If it's flexible, it's healthy. This is called 'psychological resilience' in psychology. The Turkish equivalent is to be flexible. There are three types of approaches to stress. The first is Type A personality. These are sponge-type people. A sponge absorbs, absorbs, and collapses. These Type A people are always negative. They always see flaws. They are always complaining and unhappy. The second type of people are Teflon-type people with cognitive rigidity. You know a Teflon pan doesn't bend, doesn't stick. Teflon itself doesn't burn, but it burns what it touches. These people are selfish and opportunistic, they never bend. They are comfortable themselves but hurt and break their loved ones. When a Teflon pan is scratched, you throw it away, it's useless. Because it's not flexible. These people also end up alone. These are Type B people: selfish, opportunistic, uncaring, conflict-free. The third type of people are rubber-type people. These are known as Type C personality. A Type C person has 'cognitive flexibility'. They have flexibility. They bend, they learn something, they return to their original state. You entered a stressful situation, experienced an event. You will ask what this event taught you, learn something, and look forward. When you do this, just as exercise relaxes our muscles and ensures our physical health, making our soul flexible, learning something new, and returning to its original state creates psychological resilience. Flexible thinking creates psychological resilience, just like muscle strength.”
