## Özet

**President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, participated in the “Family School” program organized by the Istanbul Civilization Institute. Tarhan, speaking with participants under the title “Natural Family,” made striking statements. Emphasizing that the family structure is undergoing a serious test with global winds and modernism, Tarhan stated that we are passing through a period where the fondness for luxury is a global threat. Tarhan warned; "In the last 10 years, household fragility has increased by over 50%. In a changing world, we must give new answers to youth and gender roles not with the clothes of the past, but with the language of today. There is an escape from marriage."**

## **There is an escape from marriage!**

President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, likened society to a living organism. Tarhan; “It is necessary to strive to prevent people from falling ill, and families from disintegrating and wearing out. This must be taken as a concern, as a cause. Because what sustains society in a community is like the stones that hold a building upright. What sustains the body are cells. Cells are arranged in a certain balance, and the body becomes a living organism. That is, the smallest unit of a living organism is the cell. Society is also like a living organism. Its smallest cell is the family. Just as the body disintegrates, collapses, and goes to death when cells break down due to genetic damage, so too does society rapidly head towards destruction when the family disintegrates. Currently, we see that the population in Turkey has stagnated. Household fragility has increased. Five-person households are called healthy households. One-person households are called fragile households. According to TÜİK statistics, in the last 10 years, there has been a rapid increase of over 50% in household fragility compared to the previous 10 years. This is a serious number. This means an increase in single-person households and two-person households. There is an escape from marriage. The same applies to young people. Therefore, a study on marriage and family is needed,” he said.

## **What is the reason behind school shootings?**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the establishment of a ministry responsible for men and boys in Australia, said; “We need to question our family policies. For example, an approach that makes a woman a truck driver and praises this at a ministerial level is to be influenced by global winds. They are globally driven winds. This is something very serious. A situation that needs to be questioned. There is new information here. Because its dosage has been exceeded worldwide, a ministry responsible for men and boys has now been established in Australia, in April 2026. Because it reduces men, and their masculine role, to violence. That is, it reduces them to violence instead of empathy and responsibility, and misogyny has spread among men. That is also behind these school shootings. When this gender competition between women and men is presented not as complementary but by saying ‘strong woman,’ a backlash also emerges from men. Here too, some men who feel oppressed organize and make misogyny an ideology concerning violence against women. They have turned it into a doctrine. As this increases, violence against women is thought to be prevented only by punishment. That is, it is not thought of in terms of educating men. It's like punishing men. This is an approach that puts men in the dock,” he stated.

## **Power has transformed from physical strength to knowledge power**

Tarhan, referring to the changing power balances with the 20th century, said; “There are three types of women in the life of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. All three are three examples of fitrah. There is no single correct path. First is the role of Lady Khadijah. A motherly, leading woman, she was wonderfully by the side of the Messenger of Allah during his difficult times. Second is Lady Fatima. Fatima, the wife of Imam Ali, preferred to remain in the shadow of men. And there is the role of Lady Aisha. Lady Aisha's role was that of someone engaged in knowledge, and also with her wisdom, and the hadiths she narrated... Many narrations about family life come from her in the life of the Messenger of Allah. There are these three examples. One who engaged in trade, one who was solely in the role of motherhood, and the other who was engaged in knowledge. For centuries, this role of Lady Fatima, even the Fatimid State was founded, the role of Fatima was glorified. Perhaps it could have been accepted in those times. That is, what the one with physical strength said would happen, but with the 20th century, power transformed from physical strength to knowledge power. Consequently, social equality between women and men must be together. In the social sphere, in the areas of self-expression and freedom,” he said.

## **“Modernism transformed male-female relationships into competition”**

Tarhan, stating that modernism fuels ego wars, said; ‘There is a concept called ‘green feminism.’ It is not compatible with our natural disposition, our belief system. Green on the outside, red on the inside. That is, it makes men suffer at home. Currently, in marriage, a normal healthy man feels responsibility towards his spouse. That is, a man who shows love and respect towards his spouse has marital maturity. We have lost these. This issue needs to be addressed officially at this time. We can prevent cultural shifts in this way. There is something the state can do. The ideal is for the mother to be able to raise her children, not just until they go to school, but also afterwards. Here, the complementary role of parents is important. Modernism transformed the male-female relationship in the family into male-female competition. They try to dominate each other. That is, when a problem arises, the focus is on ‘How can I establish dominance over my husband or wife?’ However, they do not think ‘What is the most correct decision for the future of the marriage?’ regarding the future of the marriage. They think ‘How can I dominate the other party?’ Such an approach leads to ego wars,” he said.

## **“We will dress the truths in the clothes of this era”**

Tarhan, stating that the family institution is facing serious damages, said; “The state declared a Family Decade and is trying to make some regulations. It is said, ‘Any turning back from damage is profit.’ If we cannot do this, our population will seriously decrease in 20 years. Currently, in countries like Sweden and Norway, the population has stagnated, and the system is sustained by migration. It will be the same for us, the system will revolve around migration. The family will suffer even more. Those societies are system societies; they survive in some way. Our society is not a system society; it acts according to its leader. There, the leader changes, society changes, but the rule does not change. Eastern societies have a characteristic. Eastern societies are leader-type... If we suffer damage, we truly suffer severe damage. Here, there needs to be a reassuring leadership, and a reassuring system needs to be established. Awareness is very important here. At least people have started to question, ‘What will happen in 10 years, what will happen in 20 years if it continues like this?’ For this reason, I am not pessimistic. Difficulties will be experienced, but there will be a recovery, it seems. For example, youth in a changing world, women's role in a changing world, men's role... We need to give new answers to all of these. If we give old answers to old questions, no one will follow us. We will dress the truths in the clothes of this era. We will not bring the clothes of the past to this era; we need to dress our truths in the clothes of this era,” he said.

## **Fondness for luxury is a threat!**

Tarhan, explaining how the role of women is evaluated in society, said; “There is a perception in society where the role of a housewife is devalued. This exists concerning family, and also concerning housekeeping. That's why I call her a ‘home worker’ instead of a housewife, so that her sweat and labor are visible there. That is, someone who works 24/7 at home. Men do not see this. Working women evaluate non-working women in this way. The current global economy is a wasteful economy. That is, it operates with the ‘earn-and-consume’ cycle. It increases production by increasing consumption. In such a situation, the more you shop, the more you wear things before they get old, the more acceptable human model emerges. They want a type of woman who behaves according to that model. For example, they influence this with slogans like ‘There is no ugly woman, only unkempt women,’ and here media easily has significant decisive power. We are under its influence, and being able to say no to this is important. We are going through a period where the fondness for luxury is a global threat. Having a life philosophy centered on approval and applause, driven by luxury, is dangerous. It seriously pleases one's ego but is dangerous,” he said.

## **Fund incidents are a consequence of the wasteful economy!**

Tarhan, stating that a savings consciousness must be formed, said; “In our culture, there is an understanding far removed from ostentation. We even had a culture of giving help secretly. These have changed. On one hand, help is given, on the other hand, a selfie is taken. That is, this has become a public display of help. Our cultural DNA has been tampered with, and it continues to be tampered with currently. Therefore, developing an awareness against these is important. Firstly, being aware is important. Egoism and conformism, worldliness, secularism... One who can protect themselves against these can also stand against this deviation. We are in such a time. If you turn shopping without need into an illness, you fall into various traps at this time. For example, like a fund trap. You look, who is there? Situations like greed, becoming rich, gaining status, showing off have always been prioritized over their reason. When these precede reason, after a while, 3-5 years later, suicide cases also emerge. Currently, such cases have started regarding this fund incident. That is, this is seriously a result of the wasteful economy. A savings consciousness needs to be formed against this. This also starts in the family. In our culture, for example, mothers manage the home; there is a traditional mother's role that prevents unnecessary shopping. This role is also changing. That is, in this environment where waste is glorified, I believe many diseases, these global diseases, play a role in breaking our internal resistance. If we realize this, we will correct it somehow,” he said.

## **“Antidepressants are measured in sewage”**

Tarhan, stating that depression has increased as a result of competition, said: “There is a concept called the golden mean rule. A woman takes a step, a man takes a step, and they meet in the golden middle, but if one says, ‘You will always comply with my conditions,’ and the other says, ‘You will comply with my conditions,’ then ego wars occur. Therefore, mental flexibility is absolutely necessary here. Where there is flexibility, there is compromise. A culture of compromise needs to develop. This happens in complementary relationships, not competitive relationships. Western culture glorified competition in the family, just as in all market competition. Like global competition, an understanding emerged in the family as well, stating ‘There is competition between women and men; what the stronger one says, happens.’ This understanding is one that extends from Social Darwinism to Nazism. Competition revitalizes the economy, gives ambition, but it crushes people. This time, depression increases, suicide increases, violence increases. Currently, in Manhattan, where the skyscrapers are, antidepressants are now being measured in the sewage. They are used like bread and butter to that extent. Unfortunately, it has become the same for us; they are also being measured here,” he stated.

## **3 common characteristics of happy families…**

Tarhan, also mentioning the characteristics of happy families, said: “The University of Nebraska researched family happiness. Asking, ‘Where is happiness in the family?’ Three common characteristics were identified in happy families. First, spending time together. Second, words of appreciation, praise, and approval; the use of kind words. And third, families who go to church together were observed. Spending time together is present here. A mother's, a father's gift to their child, a husband and wife's gift to each other, is quality companionship, spending time together. Mobile phones are currently tremendously negatively affecting this. Second, words of appreciation and praise. Not constantly making sarcastic remarks, constantly hurting, humiliating, but being able to correct mistakes without causing harm, even when correcting. This is also the ethics of the Prophet. ‘Be gracious to each other, husband and wife,’ says the Messenger of Allah. Being gracious means acting with courtesy. In the life of the Messenger of Allah, let alone violence, there is not even raising one's voice, especially in family life. He had no such action outside of wars. Therefore, we will take him as an example. There is also a life philosophy. Their going to church together shows that they are part of a higher meaning, and believe in a higher power,” he said.
