## Özet

**In the book "Being a Conscious Family", first published in 2014, psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan once again proved his foresight by drawing attention to today's "digital street" danger, isolated individuals, and the crisis of aimless youth back in those years. In his seminal work, which has reached its 14th edition, Tarhan continues to guide humanity today with his "Wisdom and Opportunity Education" prescription, which he offered years ago against the damage inflicted by the modern world on the family. Stating that crises within the family can turn into opportunities that strengthen relationships when managed correctly, Tarhan says, “Turn problems into opportunities!”**

Global crises such as "digital addiction," "intergenerational disconnect," and "pleasure and speed-focused individualism," which have become the biggest struggles for families today, were identified as dangers by Prof. Nevzat Tarhan in 2014, when they were not yet so visible.

## **A foresight and guide...**

The book "Being a Conscious Family – Opportunity Education in the Family" by President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, published by Timaş Publications and reaching its 14th edition as of August 2026, acts as a "foresight and guide" that predicted the family crises of today's world years ago.

Back in those years, Tarhan warned that "the door of the home now opens to an uncontrolled digital street," drawing attention to today's digital gluttony and identity erosion. He emphasized the shrinking hearts despite developing economies, and dwindling egos despite growing homes, foretelling years ago that the "anomic crisis" brought by modernity would engulf families.

## **A diagnosis made 12 years ago…**

In the digital age where traditional advice no longer works, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, who explains how to turn problems into "opportunity education" instead of crises, continues to be the strongest harbor for today's families with the diagnoses he made and the treatment methods he presented 12 years ago.

The book, meeting readers with new editions and reaching its 14th print run as of August 2026, guides a wide range of topics from the effects of changing lifestyles on the family and child education, to communication between spouses, secure attachment, and the values that hold families together.

## **“No more complaints, it’s time for solutions”**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan points out that technological and economic development alone is not enough to make individuals and families happier. Stating that while living conditions for people today have become easier, their relationships have become more difficult, Tarhan highlights the change in the value world of new generations.
Prof. Tarhan says, “New generations have unfortunately become too worldly. Generations that recognize no higher value than their own egos and comfort threaten the future of humanity,” expressing the contradictions created by modern life as follows:

“Our economy has improved, but our youth has deteriorated; our roads have widened, but our hearts have narrowed; our lives have become easier, but our relationships have become harder; our bread has grown, but our sharing has decreased; our homes have expanded, but there is no room left for anything but our egos; our money has increased, but our patience has diminished… Our display windows are full, but our hearts are empty; our freedom has grown, but our compassion has decreased; our self-confidence has risen, but our sense of shame and respect have diminished… But now is the time for solutions, not complaints.”

## **The doors of homes are opening to an uncontrolled digital street…**

Prof. Tarhan points out that the internet has become the door through which homes open to the world, stating that children and adults enter an uncontrolled “digital street” via the internet.

Emphasizing that the family is the fundamental source for raising good people, Prof. Tarhan says, “Before becoming a good spouse, a good father, or a good businessperson, we must strive to be good people. Being a good person begins in a good family environment. Therefore, we have no choice but to revive the values that hold the family together, as it is the source of the ‘good person’ quality.”

## **It's not about not having problems in the family, but about being able to solve them**

According to Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, a healthy family does not mean a family that never experiences problems. Differences of opinion, issues related to children, economic difficulties, or communication problems between spouses can arise at different stages of family life.

Prof. Tarhan states that problems experienced within the family should not be considered merely as peace-disturbing crises, pointing out that correctly managed problems can help spouses and family members get to know each other better, identify shortcomings in the relationship, and work together to find solutions.

Prof. Tarhan emphasizes the importance of adopting the approach "How can we solve this problem together?" instead of engaging in a "Who is right?" struggle during crisis periods, stating that family members should sometimes question their own expectations, communication styles, and contributions to the relationship.

## **With “opportunity education,” daily life turns into learning**

One of the book's core concepts, "opportunity education," refers to turning events encountered in daily life into a natural learning tool for children's education.

Prof. Tarhan states that in an age of speed and intensity, educating children solely through long speeches and advice may not be effective, and that everyday events can be used to teach values, responsibility, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Prof. Tarhan says, “Turn problems into opportunities!”

Giving the message “You are valuable to me” is as important as saying “I love you”

The book, which has reached a wide readership globally, also discusses the nature of the relationship between spouses in detail.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasizes that love is indispensable for strengthening family ties, but that expressing love verbally alone is not enough.

Caring for a spouse's needs when they are ill, being there during difficult times, providing support during economic or emotional crises, truly listening, and respecting personal rights are listed among the behavioral forms of love.

In Prof. Tarhan’s approach, conveying the message “You are valuable to me” through actions is as important as saying “I love you” within the family.

Prof. Tarhan states that “the warm relationships created by love are the most valuable bond of a family,” and that love also nurtures compassion, sacrifice, and empathy.

## **Trust is one of the most important assets of the family**

Prof. Tarhan emphasizes that alongside love, trust must also be present for the sustainability of family relationships, highlighting the importance of family members knowing they will not be humiliated when expressing their thoughts, being sure their character will not be targeted when they make mistakes, and trusting that they will not harm each other.

Open and honest communication, loyalty, keeping promises, and consistency in behavior are among the fundamental elements that strengthen the sense of trust in a family.

The book also includes questions to help evaluate secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment styles, stating that the ability to form good relationships can be learned and developed.

## **The balance of “I” and “we” must be maintained in the family**

Prof. Tarhan states that individuality should not be completely eliminated in a healthy family structure, and that it is important for an individual to feel a sense of belonging to their family while also being able to protect their personal space.

Instead of a structure where one person makes all the decisions within the family, Tarhan suggests a relationship model based on mutual respect, shared responsibility, and cooperation, explaining a strong family as one where individuals can be “we” around common values while preserving their own personalities.

## **The culture of consultation is important in family decisions**

One of the concepts Prof. Tarhan particularly emphasizes among the values that hold a family together is “meşveret,” meaning consultation.

Discussing family matters mutually, spouses considering each other's opinions in decision-making processes, and children being asked for their ideas on age-appropriate topics are shown among the factors that strengthen the sense of belonging within the family.

It is noted that developing a culture of discussion and negotiation instead of making unilateral decisions can contribute to solving problems before they escalate into conflicts.

## **Sense of justice directly affects family peace**

Another important concept emphasized in the book is equity.

Tarhan states that family members believing that rights and responsibilities are fairly shared is important for family peace, and clarifies that justice does not mean treating everyone the same in all circumstances.

Prof. Tarhan points out that a balanced approach should be adopted according to age, needs, and responsibilities, stating that constantly comparing children with their siblings or creating significant privileges within the family can harm children's perception of justice.

Prof. Tarhan evaluates the values that hold a family together—primarily consultation, equality, autonomy, equity, love, respect, trust, and sharing—alongside material and spiritual gains.

## **“Instead of looking for magic formulas, we will allocate time”**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan also evaluates family life through the concept of “social entropy.”

Tarhan states that in nature, order tends to degrade over time if not externally intervened, and a similar situation applies to family relationships; just as a neglected garden becomes overgrown with weeds, family relationships will not spontaneously improve without effort.

Prof. Tarhan states, “Instead of looking for magic formulas, we will allocate time. This means we will spend as much time with our spouses and children as we do with work or possessions.”

Prof. Tarhan emphasizes that being a family does not only mean living in the same house, highlighting the need to maintain emotional contact, mutual interest, and quality time spent together for strong family bonds.

## **Crises can strengthen relationships if managed correctly**

Prof. Tarhan adds that crises experienced within the family do not always mean the end of a relationship, stating that properly managed crises can enable family members to better understand each other and the problematic areas in their relationship.
