## Özet

Experts stating that smile design is not limited to merely changing the color of teeth, say it is a comprehensive aesthetic and functional treatment process.

## İçerik

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen from the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry stated that smile design is planned by taking into account the patient's facial structure, character, and functional needs, “The main goal is to correct shape and form irregularities in the teeth. Also, the person's general character can be effective in determining the tooth form.” Asst. Prof. Didinen, who stated that the possible outcome can be shown to the patient with temporary prostheses before the design, emphasized that this reduces treatment anxiety.

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen from the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry at Üsküdar University Faculty of Dentistry provided information about smile design and its processes.

**Smile design, a comprehensive treatment compatible with face, character, and function!**

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen stated that smile design is not just an application that changes the appearance of teeth, “It is a comprehensive aesthetic and functional treatment process planned to be compatible with the patient's facial structure, character, and functional needs. In this process, correct analysis, planning, and application steps are of great importance.” he said.

Asst. Prof. Didinen stated that the first step in smile design is taking detailed records of the patient, and said the following:

“At this stage, measurements, digital scans, photographs, and if necessary, videos are recorded. Thanks to these records, the patient's existing oral structure and smile dynamics are analyzed in detail. In the second step, the patient's facial structure is evaluated. The shape, length, width, and general symmetry of the face are examined to plan the most suitable tooth form for the patient. For smile design to be successful, the teeth being compatible with the face is of great importance. The third step is gum evaluation, referred to as ‘pink aesthetics’. The form, color, and harmony of the gums with the teeth play a decisive role for the aesthetic outcome. If there are aesthetic or health problems with the gums, necessary treatments are applied before the design stage.

In the fourth step, the tooth form suitable for the patient's character and face type is determined. At this stage, the selected tooth forms are combined with appropriate materials to create the design. The final step is the application stage. During this process, it is checked whether the created design is suitable for the patient's chewing functions and daily use. Thus, a balanced result is achieved both aesthetically and functionally.”

**The goal is to correct shape and form irregularities in the teeth!**

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen noted that smile design is often associated with changing the color of teeth, but the scope of the application is not limited to this, “While color change can be one of the important goals of the treatment, the main goal is to correct shape and form irregularities in the teeth.” he said.

Asst. Prof. Didinen stated that thanks to this, a more balanced aesthetic appearance can be achieved in patients whose teeth are too short, too long, broken, or crooked, and added that with smile design, new tooth forms suitable for the patient's facial structure can be created and aesthetic problems that the person is not satisfied with can be eliminated.

**A person's general character can be influential in determining tooth form!**

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen pointed out that although the application method of smile design is generally similar, the results obtained differ for each patient, “Because the shape, length, roundness, or angularity of the face directly affects the design process.” he said.

For this reason, Asst. Prof. Didinen stated that the patient's face type should be analyzed correctly, “The design should be planned accordingly. Furthermore, a person's general character can also be influential in determining the tooth form. The goal is to achieve a natural smile compatible with both the facial structure and the person's overall appearance.” he explained.

**In an aesthetic smile, gum health is as important as teeth!**

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen emphasized that an aesthetic smile is not limited to just the appearance of teeth, “The health and aesthetic condition of the gums are at least as important as the teeth.” he said.

Asst. Prof. Didinen reminded that the gums and surrounding bone tissue are important structures supporting the strength of the teeth, “Furthermore, factors such as the color, form, balance of level, and swelling of the gums also directly affect smile aesthetics. Therefore, gum health is definitely evaluated in smile design and treated if necessary. Regular maintenance is required to preserve the aesthetic and functional results obtained after smile design for a long time. This maintenance is carried out in two ways: individual care and professional care. Individual care includes the patient regularly applying the oral care routines recommended by the physician. Professional care is provided by the patient coming for regular dental check-ups and the evaluation of the condition of the restorations performed.” he explained.

**Successful smile design requires tooth planning compatible with the face!**

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen stated that one of the important advantages of smile design is being able to show the patient the possible outcome before the treatment begins, “For this purpose, temporary applications called ‘mock-ups’ can be made. This method allows the designed smile to be shown to the patient with temporary prostheses before any permanent procedure is performed. The patient can experience this appearance for a certain period and decide at this stage whether to continue the treatment. Thus, the anxiety of ‘how will my teeth look at the end of the treatment?’ largely disappears.” he said.

Asst. Prof. Turhan Didinen reiterated that not only the teeth but the entire face is evaluated in smile design, and concluded his words as follows:

“Lip structure, facial features, and expressions directly affect the aesthetic perception of the smile. Therefore, a tooth form that is not compatible with the facial structure, no matter how aesthetic it is on its own, may not create a natural appearance. In a successful smile design, all facial measurements should be carefully analyzed and the most suitable tooth characterization for the patient should be planned.”
