Prof. Barış Karabulut, a Pediatric Dentist, emphasized that although primary teeth are temporary, they are critically important for nutrition, speech, and guiding permanent teeth, stating, “Early introduction helps the child get used to the dentist, while also raising parents’ awareness about proper nutrition and oral care.” Assoc. Prof. Karabulut stressed that regular check-ups enable early detection of cavities and painless treatment, preventing major interventions in the future, and warned that oral hygiene should not be neglected after feeding in babies, and thumb-sucking and pacifier habits should be discontinued around 2-3 years of age. Assoc. Prof. Barış Karabulut, a Pediatric Dentist at Üsküdar University Dental Hospital, made statements about the importance of pedodontics applications, early examination, protective measures, and the necessity of acquiring correct habits to protect children's oral and dental health. **Cavities and anomalies are prevented with preventive dentistry!** Assoc. Prof. Barış Karabulut stated that Pedodontics, or pediatric dentistry, is a specialty dealing with the oral and dental health of children from infancy to adolescence. He said, “This process actually begins in the womb. Foundations are laid with education given to the mother during pregnancy, and the regular examination process begins with the eruption of the baby's first tooth.” Emphasizing that one of the main goals of pedodontics specialists is to provide a safe and positive experience for children before fear of the dentist develops, Assoc. Prof. Karabulut stated, “In this way, the aim is for children to make dental visits a habit and to maintain their oral-dental health throughout life. At the same time, with preventive dentistry practices, cavities and potential anomalies are prevented before they occur.” **Primary teeth, despite being temporary, have an extremely important role! ** Assoc. Prof. Barış Karabulut, providing information that procedures such as fissure sealants and fluoride applications are performed within the scope of preventive dentistry practices, said, “Early childhood caries are detected, and teeth are restored with fillings or root canal treatments when necessary. Additionally, potential crowding in teeth is identified early to prevent future orthodontic problems.” Referring to the recommendation that children's first dental examination should be done as soon as the first tooth emerges or at the latest around one year of age, Assoc. Prof. Karabulut stated the following: “This early introduction facilitates the child's adaptation to the dentist, while also raising parents' awareness about proper nutrition and oral care. Primary teeth, contrary to popular belief, have an extremely important role despite being temporary. Protecting primary teeth is essential for children's healthy nutrition, proper speech, and the development of aesthetic self-confidence. Furthermore, primary teeth serve as guides for permanent teeth. Early loss can lead to both physical and psychological problems.” **Oral hygiene after feeding should not be neglected! ** Assoc. Prof. Barış Karabulut reiterated that regular check-ups at an early age enable the detection of dental cavities in their initial stages, stating, “Thus, treatment becomes possible with simpler and painless methods, preventing procedures such as root canal treatment or general anesthesia that might be necessary in advanced stages.” Highlighting the great importance of oral hygiene during infancy, Assoc. Prof. Karabulut explained, “After teeth start to emerge, milk remaining on the tooth surface must be cleaned after every feeding. This cleaning can initially be done with a damp cloth or gauze, and finger brushes can be used later on. Furthermore, it is recommended not to put babies to sleep with a breast or bottle and not to neglect oral hygiene after feeding. Habits such as thumb-sucking and prolonged pacifier use, if continued after 2-3 years of age, can lead to deformities in tooth and jaw structure. Therefore, it is important to gradually discontinue these habits without forcing the child.” **Pedodontics, more of a preventive approach than a treatment! ** Assoc. Prof. Barış Karabulut stated that teeth grinding in children, especially during teething periods, can be temporarily considered normal. He added, “However, if this condition continues for a long period and intensely, it must be evaluated as it can damage the teeth and jaw joint. In necessary cases, protective splints, psychological support, or medical treatment options may be considered.” Stating that the habit of putting children to sleep with milk at night is also risky for dental health, Assoc. Prof. Karabulut concluded his words as follows: “Breast milk or milk given with a bottle, when left on the tooth surface for a long time, creates a breeding ground for cavities. Especially during sleep, reduced saliva flow increases this risk. Therefore, cleaning teeth after feeding and discontinuing bottle use as early as possible are recommended. In conclusion, pedodontics is not just a field where existing problems are treated; it is also an important branch of science at the center of preventive approaches aimed at protecting children's oral and dental health. Correct habits acquired at an early age form the foundation of a healthy oral structure.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.88473](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.88473) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/the-habit-of-putting-children-to-sleep-with-milk-at-night-can-risk-their-dental-*
