One of the most frequently discussed topics among parents before their babies are born is choosing a 'name'. While some prefer to name their babies after a father or an ancestor, others agree on a more modern name. Although a name is seen as a distinguishing feature of a person's recognition in society and their social environment, its meaning carries great importance for human personality development and the sense of belonging. For this reason, there are some points to consider when naming a child. [Üsküdar Üniversitesi](https://uskudar.edu.tr) Founding Rector Psychiatrist [Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan,](https://www.nevzattarhan.com ) evaluated the place and importance of a name in human personality development to an AA reporter.

## **"Names with aggressive connotations should not be given" **

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the branch of science examining personal names is called "antroponomy," and this branch analyzes names according to their linguistic roots.

Tarhan stated that there were ruthless individuals in history such as "Cengiz Hülagu," and giving such names to a child would only mean labeling them, and he continued: "We must ensure that the child is accepted in all areas globally, without being labeled. When the child goes to important places in the future, their name should not be an obstacle. But we need to ask, 'Does it also represent our religious and national values?' If we ask ourselves these questions when naming a child, the child will not break away from their values. However, saying that it's not a problem if the child breaks away from their values is also the parents' choice. But they must also consider that this choice will affect the child's role in life.

It is necessary to choose names with beautiful and good connotations, and to avoid names that are cruel, aggressive, or not suitable for cultural values. This is important for the child's mental health. A suitable name should be given to the child; the name should be special to them, remind them of something, but not reveal everything about them. That is, the name should represent the child well but not reveal everything about them. Radical, marginal names should not be preferred too much."

## **"Name is an important factor in the formation of a sense of belonging"**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that some studies and observations on child development and name selection revealed a causal link.

Emphasizing that a name is an important factor in the formation of a child's sense of belonging, individual identity, and relationships, Tarhan made the following assessment: "A name provides information about which culture, belief system, or origin a person belongs to. Therefore, a name is important for the sense of belonging in identity development. Especially during adolescence, when asking 'Who am I?', 'What should I pursue?', a name is also important as an option.

A name is important both in a person's inner world and in terms of social acceptance, as in 'I should belong here, my name is this.' It has two aspects. One is the importance of the chosen name for a person's inner acceptance and social acceptance. The second is that the person will carry that name in terms of their inner perception in individual identity formation. When naming the person who will carry it, parents and elders usually give names from their own dreams and desires. It is important to consider how these names will be represented in society as the child grows. When considering this, if we want children to belong to the society they live in, if we are at peace with our society and our national values, in such cases we give names that preserve and evoke our national values. If we are not at peace with our own values, we give names that align with the values we are at peace with."

## **"If a person carries their name well, how they are perceived does not affect them"**

Tarhan stated that it should not be forgotten that a person will carry their name throughout their life, and therefore one should consider "Will they be able to use it proudly?", and he continued: "If there are aggressive expressions in a name, such as Savaş (War), Vural (Hit), Volkan (Volcano), Alev (Flame), the name becomes like a label for those individuals. Here, the self-fulfilling prophecy rule is at play. A study conducted by Israelis at Darussalam Hebrew University confirmed this rule. People's social perceptions and facial expressions were compared. People try to determine socio-economic status based on names. The human brain immediately categorizes, forming automatic thoughts. Labeling is done based on names.

Therefore, the first impression in society is also important. People get used to it after getting to know someone, but it's important for the first impression. When a person's personality perception emerges in the first impression, rather than their initial perceived appearance, if they carry their name well, how they are perceived does not affect them."

Tarhan pointed out that people's value judgments form their decisions, and that names are very important in social labeling as these decisions are formed.

## **"Families should consider three categories when naming"**

Tarhan explained that if a child is desired to modernize while preserving their own identity, a name should be given accordingly, adding: "But if we want the child to modernize by abandoning their own identity, we can name them accordingly. If we want the child not to modernize but to remain traditional, we will again give a name accordingly. From the parents' perspective, this situation is evaluated this way. Families should consider these three categories when naming children," he suggested.

 Tarhan emphasized that the meanings of names are important in a child's personality development, providing the following information: "In Anatolia, there is a concept called 'named after their essence' (ismiyle müsemma). Parents should give names that are appropriate for our values and represent us. We have actually developed our own interim solution in this regard. Giving two names is common for us. By giving two names, we are actually giving the child the freedom to choose. We leave the child an open space regarding which name they will use. Also, it is common to have one name in official records and another within the family. These individuals can experience personality conflicts. For this, it is important for the child to be able to carry both given names with honor. However, leaving an open space for children is still a conceivable solution."
