## Özet

Experts state that eczema not only affects skin health but can also impact a person's social life and psychological well-being. Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol points out that symptoms, especially in visible areas like the face, neck, and hands, can increase the anxiety of being judged by others, and says, 'As anxiety increases, so does the desire to hide the skin, avoid eye contact, or leave the environment early. Although avoidance provides temporary relief, it can make subsequent social encounters more difficult.' Emphasizing the importance of awareness that eczema is not contagious and is not considered a sign of poor hygiene, Erol stated that psychological support can be beneficial if anxiety narrows the person's living space.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the effects of eczema's visible symptoms on social relationships and daily life.

**The impact of eczema is not limited to the skin!**

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol, stating that eczema is often defined by itching, dryness, and visible changes in the skin, said, 'However, the impact of a disease is not limited to symptoms appearing solely in the body.'
Erol noted that symptoms, especially in easily noticeable areas like the face, neck, and hands, can also affect how a person feels in social settings, and said, 'When going to meet a friend, speaking at a business meeting, or meeting someone new, thoughts that many people are looking at their skin might cross their mind. These thoughts can eventually turn into a tiring cycle.'

**As anxiety increases, the tendency to avoid social environments increases! **

Erol stated that while talking to the person in front of them, an individual constantly keeps a part of their attention on their own skin and the reactions of the other person, and said, 'A brief glance, an unclear change in facial expression, or a pause in conversation can be interpreted as eczema drawing attention and the other party thinking negatively about them.'
Erol stated that as anxiety increases, so does the desire to hide the skin, avoid eye contact, or leave the environment early, and pointed out that although avoidance provides temporary relief, it can make subsequent social encounters more difficult.

**Fear of stigmatization can lead to self-shame! **

Erol, noting that explaining this anxiety solely by a person's way of thinking would be incomplete, said, 'There are also misconceptions about visible skin conditions.'
Erol stated that even though eczema is not contagious and is not considered a sign of poor hygiene, a person might still worry that others will think so, and said the following:
'Especially if they have encountered a hurtful comment or a distant reaction in the past, this anxiety becomes more understandable. Over time, the thought 'others will judge me' can turn into the self-directed judgment 'there is something shameful about my appearance.' The psychological burden of stigmatization is also seen when a person starts living with the expectation of hearing that remark again.'

**Anxiety in eczema can narrow social life! **

Erol, pointing out that not everyone with eczema experiences social anxiety, said, 'The visibility of the disease alone does not determine how much difficulty a person will face.'
However, Erol stated that constantly canceling meetings due to concerns about visible skin, staying in the background at work, avoiding romantic relationships despite wanting intimacy, or spending a significant part of the day calculating what others might think, could indicate a need for psychological support, and expressed that what is important is whether anxiety is gradually narrowing the person's living space.

**Maintaining social life while living with eczema means being able to participate in life despite anxiety! **

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol emphasized that the aim of psychological support is not to invalidate the difficulty experienced by telling the person 'Nobody is looking at your skin', and said, 'The goal is to recognize which thoughts increase anxiety, evaluate the meanings attributed to ambiguous social cues, and enable the person to re-approach avoided situations at their own pace.'
Erol underlined that cognitive behavioral therapy can offer a useful framework for working on this cycle, and concluded her remarks as follows:
'Acceptance and commitment therapy, on the other hand, can help a person make room again for relationships and experiences they value, without waiting for challenging thoughts about the skin to completely disappear.

Maintaining social life while living with eczema does not mean that a person must always feel comfortable. Sometimes, progress means going to a meeting even when anxious, expressing one's opinion in a meeting, or allowing intimacy with someone. Considering the emotional burden alongside dermatological treatment is important for a person's quality of life. Eczema awareness, on the other hand, should encompass not only recognizing skin symptoms but also correcting misconceptions and approaching people living with a visible condition with greater care.'
