Experts emphasize that gambling addiction can emerge in some neurological diseases like Parkinson's disease and after certain medications affecting the nervous system, also noting that it can develop after successful bariatric surgeries. This phenomenon is called 'addiction transfer'. Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz, Psychiatrist at Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, made evaluations regarding gambling addiction, also known as 'gambling disorder'. Gambling addiction is a brain disease. Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz stated that gambling disorder is defined as 'persistent and repetitive unwanted gambling behaviors, characterized by an inability to control gambling behavior in a way that impairs an individual's personal, family, or occupational functioning.' Stating that due to limited epidemiological studies in Turkey, there are small-scale studies, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, 'The prevalence of gambling addiction is reported to be approximately between 0.1% and 2.7% for adults.' ## **The reason for gambling addiction may be genetic** Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz noted that studies on how gambling addiction develops suggest several important factors, one of which is genetic predisposition. Stating that certain genetic factors inherited from family members are known to constitute a risk factor for gambling addiction, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz continued: 'At the same time, numerous studies have identified factors such as male gender, young age, region of residence, low socioeconomic status as sociodemographic characteristics, as well as the onset of gambling activities at an early age, co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses, adverse childhood experiences, and family history of gambling and substance use, as risk factors for gambling addiction. In gender studies, the lifetime prevalence of gambling addiction has been found to be higher in men than in women.' ## **The phenomenon of addiction transfer can also lead to gambling** On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz emphasized that, interestingly, gambling addiction also emerges in some neurological diseases like Parkinson's disease and after certain medications affecting the nervous system. 'Similarly, bariatric surgery methods are increasingly used in obesity treatment today. Psychiatric complications can be observed after surgery. Clinicians have reported that after successful weight-loss surgeries, some patients stop overeating and instead may develop alcohol, substance, or gambling addiction. This phenomenon has been termed addiction transfer,' she said. ## **Internet use facilitates gambling** Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz stated that the widespread use of the internet facilitates gambling, noting that especially smartphone use, easy access to the internet and betting sites, and the attractive advertisements of such sites are potential risk factors. ## **Family support is important in the treatment process** Pointing out the importance of expert support in the treatment of gambling addiction, Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz said, 'If they experience any problems related to this condition, seeking counseling will definitely prevent future issues. Even if the individual does not seek professional support, it is crucial for families to do so, as it will be an important step in treatment. What families do during the treatment process is as important as medication and therapy.' ## **What should relatives of a gambling addict do?** Saying 'Families should first seek individual support for their burnout,' Prof. Dr. Gül Eryılmaz advised, 'Families should not blame themselves, and they are not alone. They should not pay debts that may arise due to gambling, and if necessary, they should seek financial counseling.
