## Özet

Experts state that a significant number of children with Cerebral Palsy may experience speech and swallowing difficulties, a condition that directly impacts not only communication but also quality of life.

## İçerik

Language and Speech Therapist Anuş Tahmincioğlu emphasized that dysarthria observed in these children is not an inability to express, but rather a difficulty in muscle coordination. She stated, “In such cases, language and speech therapists guide those muscles using tactile methods or strengthen the presence, not the intensity, of sound with different protocols.” Tahmincioğlu pointed out that the therapy process should not be limited solely to the clinical setting, adding that active participation of families in the therapy process plays a decisive role in the child’s development. Tahmincioğlu also noted that early intervention is important, but the anxiety of 'being too late' should not negatively affect the process.

Language and Speech Therapist Anuş Tahmincioğlu from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about therapy processes aimed at improving communication and quality of life in children with Cerebral Palsy.

**A large proportion of children with Cerebral Palsy face swallowing difficulties and speech impediments!**

Language and Speech Therapist Anuş Tahmincioğlu stated that thousands of words can be seen trapped in the eyes of a child with Cerebral Palsy, saying, “As language and speech therapists, our duty is to build the path to freedom for those words. Because communication is not just about making sounds; it is the purest form of being human and feeling human.”

Tahmincioğlu explained that Cerebral Palsy is defined as a 'disorder of movement and posture' in medical textbooks, adding, “However, for therapists, Cerebral Palsy is that unique yet challenging spectrum in a child's way of perceiving the world. Statistics show that over 85 percent of these children suffer from swallowing difficulties, and a large proportion face speech impediments. These figures tell us that a child's most fundamental right, the 'right to express oneself,' is at risk.”

**Dysarthria is not a lack of things to say, but a difficulty in muscle coordination! **

Language and Speech Therapist Anuş Tahmincioğlu noted that often, the inability to speak is thought of as 'having nothing to say,' but stated, “However, dysarthria, which we frequently observe in children with Cerebral Palsy, is not a deficiency in expression but rather stems from a difficulty in the coordination of motor speech muscles.”

Tahmincioğlu explained that in such cases, language and speech therapists guide those muscles using tactile methods, saying, “Or, with different protocols, the presence of sound, rather than its intensity, is strengthened. If sound cannot find a way, support is sought from technological methods, and that child's gaze is transformed into sentences.”

**A single bite can be a struggle for survival for a child with Cerebral Palsy! **

Language and Speech Therapist Anuş Tahmincioğlu pointed out that when working with individuals with Cerebral Palsy, focusing solely on speech therapy is not enough, stating, “Sometimes, swallowing therapy also comes into play when working with these children. For a mother, there is little greater anxiety than not being able to feed her child. For a child with Cerebral Palsy, a single bite can sometimes turn into a struggle for survival. At this point, it must be ensured that that bite goes to the stomach, not the lungs.”

**Starting early is valuable; thinking you're too late overshadows the process! **

Addressing the issues most frequently asked by parents, who sometimes worry that they are too late, Language and Speech Therapist Anuş Tahmincioğlu said the following:

“Generally, questions like ‘Is it too early?’ or ‘Are we too late?’ arise. However, every child carries potential within their own time. Neuroplasticity, the miraculous regenerative power of the brain, is at its highest level in the first three years. But this situation should not cause families who decide to start therapy to blame themselves with the perspective of ‘are we too late?’; blaming themselves does not benefit their children at all. At this point, what is important is to decide what kind of process will be followed. Yes, starting early is valuable; but thinking you are too late is nothing more than overshadowing that valuable process.”

**A child's development does not fit solely into the session room; it grows at home with love, repetition, and time spent together! **

In this process, which also includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and special education teachers, therapy should also continue at home. Because a child's development should not be limited to 40 minutes in a clinic room but should extend throughout an entire day spent at home. Every step taken with experts gains meaning when continued at home. Because a child's development does not fit solely into the session room; it grows with love, repetition, and time spent together.”
