## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar Üniversitesi, met with institutional managers within the scope of the conference titled “Spiritual Diseases of the Age and Jerusalem” organized by the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Family and Social Services. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who made important shares under the title “6 Woes, 6 Cures in the Spiritual Life of the Age,” stated that humans have four fundamental fears, and if these four fears cannot be resolved, individuals may fall into crisis and depression. **

In the program held at Bağlarbaşı Cultural Center, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that philosophy and religion are the two fields that address the dimension of meaning the most, and highlighted the need to synthesize different perspectives in his speech.

## **“The spiritual dimension emerged after quantum dynamics”**

Tarhan stated that humans have biological, psychological, and social dimensions; “The Biopsychosocial model is mentioned in the definition of psychiatry. Humans have biological, psychological, and social dimensions. Now, with the newly added dimension, especially after quantum dynamics, the spiritual dimension has emerged. Humans are no longer just biological, psychological, social beings, but also spiritual beings. What has been understood after quantum dynamics is that instead of 'digital is everything', now 'everything is digital'. Einstein proved the relativity of time, and now, in 2022, the relativity of matter, registered with a Nobel, has been proven. In other words, what we call matter is actually an energy, a wave function. What we currently call the universe is also a digital simulation. This has been proven. In fact, what we call matter is entirely a perception. That is, we live entirely within a wave function. For example, dialectical materialism said that there was matter first, and meaning emerged as a reflection of matter. Currently, quantum physics says that there is information first, there is a universal database. Its equivalent in the Quran is referred to as Levh-i Mahfûz.” he said.

## **“Humans have four fundamental fears…”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, explaining why humans need spirituality, said; “Humans have a search for meaning. Humans have four fundamental fears. The first is the search for meaning, the fear of meaninglessness. The second is the fear of loneliness, the third is the fear of death, and the fourth is the fear of uncertainty. If these four fears cannot be resolved, people fall into crisis and depression. This is also a view confirmed neurobiologically. That is, when information comes to a person's mind, they need to make sense of it. They need to remove it from uncertainty. If they place it within a logical framework, that information is accepted as sound information. Just as too many files accumulating in a computer's cache slows down the computer, if unresolved files multiply in the human brain, the person's brain slows down and mental health deteriorates. In Eastern societies, we immediately take refuge in faith and find comfort. However, believing in this age is a good thing that gives peace to people. There is a need for belief, a need for consolation. But beliefs must be rational.” he said.

## **“Among 4,300 religions, the most rational is the belief in the oneness of God (Tawhid)”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that there are 4,300 religions in the world and none of them meet the need for consolation, touched upon the importance of the belief in the oneness of God (Tawhid). Tarhan; “There is one among them, just as the need to eat in our stomach is proof of the existence of food, so too is humanity's need for eternity, or the need to believe in a higher power like a conception of God, to be part of a greater meaning, proof of the existence of a creator of the universe. The belief in the oneness of God (Tawhid) is the most rational among the 4,300 religions that best explain it. Only with one God can this universe be balanced and systematic. It can be understood through reasoning, like it wouldn't work if there were two gods. Of course, this is a separate topic of discussion, but then we also need to question our conception of religion and God. There is such a traditional development. As a changing world, let's elaborate a bit more on what kind of Islam emerges within this changing world.

- There is capitalist religiosity; one can easily lie despite performing daily prayers.

- One gives charity but not zakat (almsgiving).

- One eats forbidden things despite eating with the right hand.

- One breaks promises despite fasting.

- One disregards bribery and the rights of others despite going to the mosque.

- There is such capitalist religiosity. There is 'wardrobe religiosity' (superficial religiosity).” he said.

## **“We need to raise children by teaching a hierarchy of emotions and a hierarchy of importance”**

Tarhan stated that the most discussed, most valued, and most important topic in a family is that family's sacred value; “If money is discussed, if property is discussed, or if position and status are discussed, that is your sacred value. We must create a hierarchy of importance and priority for the topics we discuss with children within the family. If importance and priority are being a good person, being a moral, honest person, and if we raise them with these principles, that child eventually develops an inner guardian, a 'cell' in their brain, when they encounter something wrong. The child can say no to it. While raising them, we need to educate them by teaching a hierarchy of emotions and a hierarchy of importance.” he said.

## **“If we expect infinite mercy from the Creator, we must abide by His just prohibitions…”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, stating that justice and compassion are very similar in spiritual life; “Just as raising a good child is possible by ensuring they follow rules, if there is a lot of love in the family but weak discipline, a spoiled child grows up. If there is neither love nor discipline in the family, an antisocial, delinquency-prone, conscienceless child grows up. If there is no love at all, but a lot of discipline, a child with low self-confidence grows up. So, such a balance of love and discipline is very important. Because discipline teaches the rules of life, and love gives life energy. Love is like a car's engine. There's a good engine, and there's a driver at the wheel. Some have a very skilled driver, but a weak engine. Both need to be balanced. Logic and emotion are in such a balance. That's why, in humans, logic and emotion, in family, love and discipline, and in life, a balance of justice and compassion... Therefore, if we expect infinite mercy from the Creator in spiritual life, we must abide by His just prohibitions. Only if we obey His just prohibitions can we expect it. Just as there is a balance of love and discipline in a family between these two, we need to know that if we adhere to the balance of compassion and justice in our relationship with the Creator, we can ask for His mercy.” he said.

## **“Social conscience is related to an individual's personal conscience”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, drawing attention to the existence of 3 types of justice; “Judicial justice is determined by laws. Social justice is determined by environment, traditions, and cultures. Moral justice, on the other hand, is determined by a person's conscience. That is, justice regulating laws, written law, traditions as social norms, and conscience as moral norms. Therefore, moral norms are not genetic; they are learned from society. There might be a genetic predisposition, but society teaches the norms to the individual. Public, social conscience is very much related to an individual's personal conscience. So, this is related to a teaching. Therefore, the concept of morality, the feeling of accountability for everything; inorganic matter does not hold us accountable. So, if we were created by chance, if we exist by chance, if we are made of normal matter, then it can hold us accountable.” he said.

## **“All 5 intelligences work in a balanced and interconnected way”**

Tarhan, speaking about the correct management diagram; “Its neural equivalents are referred to as conscientious intelligence, logical intelligence, social and emotional intelligence. Here, logical intelligence demonstrates a high level of logical intelligence by being able to be idealistic, dream, generate ideas, create expectations, think strategically, plan for the future, and believe in oneself and trust oneself. A high level of emotional intelligence means being happy, optimistic, enjoyable, believing in people, being passionate, seeing the positive. Conscientious intelligence involves listening to one's inner voice, responsibility, accountability, responsibility towards the Creator, respecting ethical values, and being moral. Social intelligence includes being open to relationships, being trustworthy, conducting risk assessment, managing crises, being an active listener, being able to make solution-oriented decisions, considering the emotional needs and rights of others, and strengthening family ties. All these 5 intelligences work in a balanced and interconnected way.” he said.

## **“The Homo Economicus model is the model of the capitalist system”**

At the highly attended meeting, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that there are 2 types of models in decision-making; “One is the Homo Economicus model. This is the model of the capitalist system. Later this changed. It says that people are completely rational actors. They have perfect information. It is derived from microeconomics. The actor weighs the benefits and harms of various actions, and the actor maximizes the greatest benefit, and this option is benefit-oriented. In other words, Homo Economicus giving rise to wild capitalism. However, later research shows that when people work benefit-oriented, they do not invest in their basic needs when making investments, but rather invest in areas they love. They marry the person they love. Therefore, a rational actor does not only act with reason, but also with emotions; people also make emotional decisions. After this, people began to be called Homo Psychologicus instead of Homo Economicus. For example, they invest for more appreciation and praise. They go and pay millions of dollars for a painting. Just to get applause…” he said.

## **“Humans need to form a mental jury”**

Tarhan, stating that when we think about why humans do not act rationally, it is understood that humans are Homo Psychologicus; “Humans are boundedly rational. The actor does not possess perfect information. Human processing ability is derived from social and cognitive psychology. There are limits to their intelligence and behaviors. Instead of maximizing utility, they satisfice, accepting what is 'good enough'. The actor uses various cognitive shortcuts to cope with 'information overload' or 'information scarcity'. Group and broader social pressures can lead the actor to behave irrationally, even if it contradicts their beliefs and values. People can act irrationally. Homo Psychologicus can make mistakes even if it doesn't align with their reason. Therefore, humans need to form a mental jury. In our mental jury, there will initially be a judge. They will decide whether it is appropriate and valid, but there will also be four members. First, a scientist will determine rights and wrongs. They will say true or false, good or bad, as if putting this information into a laboratory. The conscience person will question good and bad, trust, and moral values. The emotion person will distinguish beautiful and ugly. The logical person will determine profit and loss. The capitalist system has reduced humans to logic. However, humans are beings with emotional and conscientious dimensions, and a dimension that tests reality, not just logical ones. If one makes decisions using all of these, they will have made a decision using the 5Ws and 1H (who, what, when, where, why, how).” he said.

## **“Events in Gaza are a form of political narcissism”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the events in Gaza, said that these events are a form of political narcissism. Tarhan; “For their political interests in the world, they can be ruthless, merciless, and without compassion… This is a serious matter in the world, and its consequences will be different in the medium to long term. I see it as an opportunity not to lead humanity to evil, but to lead it to wisdom, to find good and truth. People probably need to go through this process. What is important is for us to remain in the right position and stand by the truth. Both conscientiously and as a country, we are trying to do this as much as we can.” he said.

## **The ‘goose’ model in sustaining the family ship…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in our age; “They call geese 'goose-brained'. Yet, these animals fly with such a strategic method that the lead goose constantly swaps places with others. When their wings get tired, they switch places with the one behind. They take turns, flying across continents. The lead goose creates a pressure vacuum. The ones behind flap their wings less. They swap places as they get tired. This is teamwork, but humankind cannot do teamwork. 'Your mother is my mother, your money is my money, what you say is what I say' – they can experience ego battles. That's why I state on every platform that the biggest enemy of the family is ego battles, power struggles… However, if you look at our culture in family relationships, spouses are not called 'karı koca' (husband and wife) or 'çift' (couple), but 'refik' and 'refika'. 'Refik' means male travel companion, 'refika' means female travel companion. 'Refik, refika' actually means you are married, you have embarked on a journey in life, you are travel companions on the journey of life... Travel companions complete each other's deficiencies. They do not compete with each other. If there is a power relationship in marriage, it becomes a competitive relationship. The family is the best example of teamwork. Even if the parties divorce, they should be able to come together and talk for the child's well-being. A husband and wife can divorce, but one cannot divorce from motherhood and fatherhood. Therefore, if we aim for teamwork to properly sustain family values, let's take geese as an example, saying 'we are on the same ship; we must continue this for the good of the ship.' Geese provide a good example for us as teamwork in family life.” he said.
