## Özet

Experts state that there is an increase in accidents resulting in neck and back fractures during summer months, attributing this to the rise in pool and sea activities.

## İçerik

Emphasizing that head-first dives into shallow water particularly lead to serious spinal injuries, Brain, Nerve, and Spinal Cord Surgeon Op. Dr. İdris Avcı stated, “Shallow water applies sudden and harsh resistance to the body, causing significant pressure on the neck and spine. Dives made without knowledge of pool or sea depth can lead to injuries.” Avcı pointed out that young adults and children are in the risk group, adding that the treatment process progresses with surgical intervention or physical therapy depending on the severity of the injury.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Brain, Nerve, and Spinal Cord Surgeon Op. Dr. İdris Avcı discussed neck and back fractures that can occur in pools and the sea, risk factors, susceptibility by age groups, and treatment processes.

**Neck and back fractures are increasing due to carelessness and insufficient safety measures!**

Reminding that pool and sea activities intensify during hot summer months for cooling off and enjoyment, Brain, Nerve, and Spinal Cord Surgeon Op. Dr. İdris Avcı said, “However, in cases of carelessness or insufficient safety measures, serious injuries such as neck and back fractures can occur. Especially jumping into shallow water can lead to severe trauma to the head, neck, and spine.”

Pointing out that a significant pressure can build up on the spine if the body makes fast and and hard contact with the surface during jumps in a pool or the sea, Avcı explained, “This situation can lead to severe injuries such as neck or back fractures. Neck fractures and back and lumbar fractures are most commonly observed. Neck fractures occur as a result of the breaking of vertebrae in the neck region. These fractures can damage the spinal cord, leading to permanent disabilities like paralysis. Back and lumbar fractures, on the other hand, are breaks in the vertebrae of the back and lumbar region. Such fractures can affect spinal stability, causing loss of movement and severe pain.”

**Head-first diving into shallow water is the most common cause of neck and spinal injuries!**

Op. Dr. İdris Avcı, mentioning that injuries such as neck and back fractures usually occur as a result of uncontrolled and careless jumps, explained the most common causes of injuries in pools or the sea as follows:

“Head-first diving into shallow water is the most common cause of head and neck injuries. Shallow water applies sudden and harsh resistance to the body, causing significant pressure on the neck and spine. Dives made without knowledge of pool or sea depth can lead to injuries. Dives in rocky areas or areas with obstacles invite accidents. Such obstacles can cause neck and back fractures as a result of accidental impact. Uncontrolled body movement or faulty techniques during a jump increase neck and spinal injuries. Especially new swimmers can experience serious injuries if they are not proficient in safe techniques. Such injuries usually occur when safety measures are not taken or water depth is not checked. Most of these injuries can be prevented with simple safety precautions.”

**Risk is higher in young adults and children!**

Op. Dr. İdris Avcı, emphasizing that while neck and back fractures occur in all age groups in pools and the sea, some age groups are at higher risk than others, stated, “Young adults with a quest for adventure and high energy levels generally participate more in risky activities such as water sports and diving. This increases the risk of injury.”

Avcı also stated that children have a high risk of injury because they may not fully assess dangers, adding, “Children are prone to such injuries because they often do not know proper techniques during diving and are usually unsupervised. Additionally, middle-aged and older adults also carry a risk of injury, especially when participating in water activities during holidays. In this group, the healing process can be more challenging due to decreased body flexibility and more fragile bone structure.”

**The treatment process is determined based on the severity of the injury…**
 />

Op. Dr. İdris Avcı, stating that the treatment process after neck and back fractures occurring in a pool or the sea can vary depending on the severity of the injury and its impact on the spine, said, “Spinal fractures can be accompanied by spinal cord injuries, in which case the treatment and rehabilitation process becomes more complex.”

**Avcı concluded his words by addressing the main steps in the treatment process:**

“Neck and back fractures may require emergency surgical intervention in some cases. When spinal stability is not achieved, a surgical operation is performed to stabilize fractured vertebrae and reduce pressure on nerve tissue. Spinal stabilization is achieved using spinal fusion or metal supports. For mild fractures, instead of surgical intervention, stabilizing devices such as neck braces or corsets are used. These devices accelerate the healing process by keeping the spine in its natural position. Physical therapy is of great importance during the healing process. Regular physical therapy programs are applied to strengthen spinal support muscles and regain mobility. Physical therapy is important for pain control and regaining daily living activities. Severe spinal injuries can restrict the patient's mobility, creating a psychologically challenging process. In such cases, providing psychological support to the patient and their relatives ensures a more positive rehabilitation process.”
