## Özet

Experts state that stroke is a vital health crisis that develops in seconds and can lead to permanent damage, emphasizing that early intervention saves lives.

## İçerik

Noting that facial drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty are among the most critical symptoms, Neurologist Dr. Celal Şalçini said, “The only thing you need to do the moment you suspect a stroke in a loved one or yourself is to immediately call 112 Emergency Services.” Dr. Şalçini stated that the risk of paralysis can be significantly reduced with interventions made in the first hours, and pointed out that misconceptions among the public, such as ‘sleep it off’ or ‘splash water on their face,’ can lead to serious consequences. Dr. Şalçini also emphasized that stroke can occur at any age, that high blood pressure is the most important risk factor, and shared three life-saving points in the fight against stroke.
Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Neurologist Dr. Celal Şalçini, made statements regarding the symptoms of stroke, the importance of rapid intervention, and the dangers of misconceptions in society, as part of May 10th World Stroke Awareness Day.

**Stroke does not come insidiously, but 'at lightning speed'!**

Dr. Celal Şalçini noted that stroke is a condition where brain cells in a certain area begin to die due to a sudden blockage or rupture and bleeding in one of the blood vessels supplying the brain, stating, “You can think of this like the main water pipe of a city bursting or becoming blocked; life stops in areas where water doesn’t reach. Just minutes after a stroke occurs, millions of neurons are lost, which disables functions like speech, movement, and memory controlled by that part of the brain.”

Pointing out that the most critical symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the ‘face, arm, speech’ rule, Dr. Şalçini warned, “Facial drooping, one arm being unable to be held up and falling, and slurred speech are the clearest warning signs. Symptoms usually appear suddenly within seconds, and with each passing minute, the loss of brain tissue accelerates. Remember, stroke is not insidious; it’s a condition that comes ‘at lightning speed’; waiting for symptoms to pass on their own is the biggest mistake.”

**First Step in Case of Suspicion: Just 112!**

“The only thing you need to do the moment you suspect a stroke in a loved one or yourself is to immediately call 112 Emergency Services,” said Dr. Celal Şalçini, continuing as follows:

“Attempting to go to the hospital on your own or interventions such as giving the patient water, aspirin, or blood pressure medication can further worsen the situation. The ambulance crew will direct you to the most appropriately equipped ‘Stroke Center’ and begin the treatment process en route.

In stroke, ‘time is brain’. With clot-dissolving treatments administered within the first 4-5 hours after symptoms begin, or angiography interventions in the initial hours, brain damage can be completely prevented or minimized. The earlier the intervention, the greater the patient’s chance of returning to normal life without paralysis. In short, a patient who arrives early is a patient who gets the chance to regain their health.”

**Stroke does not pass in sleep, nor does it improve by splashing water!**

Emphasizing that every hour of delayed intervention exponentially increases the risk of permanent disability, Dr. Celal Şalçini said, “Brain cells have a very limited capacity for regeneration; when an oxygen-deprived area completely dies, permanent paralysis in organs like hands, arms, and legs controlled by that area, swallowing disorders, or speech loss can occur. In delayed cases, the treatment process evolves into challenging physical therapy sessions lasting months, and unfortunately, full recovery may not always be possible.”

Dr. Şalçini pointed out that beliefs among the public such as ‘their blood pressure rose, let them sleep a bit and it will pass’ or ‘let’s splash cold water on their face’ unfortunately invite death or disability, stating, “Stroke does not pass in sleep, nor does it improve by splashing water! Another misconception is the idea that stroke only affects the elderly; however, stroke is a serious health crisis that can affect every age group, from babies to young adults.”

**Stroke is a preventable disease!**

Stating that high blood pressure is the number one problem inviting stroke, Dr. Celal Şalçini concluded his words as follows:
“This is followed by diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking. However, it is within our power to reduce the risk of stroke through lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, walking 30 minutes a day, and avoiding tobacco products. Being the captain of your own health and managing these risks is the most powerful treatment method.

In the fight against stroke, consider these three points a life-saving guide:

***1. Don’t Waste Time: The moment you see a symptom, check the time and immediately call 112.
2. Recognize the Symptoms: If there is facial drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty, the situation is serious.
3. Take Precautions: Keep your blood pressure under control and stay active; stroke is a preventable disease!”***
