## Özet

While drug treatments for Alzheimer's disease cannot completely halt the progression of the disease in some cases, the TPS method stands out as a complementary option.

## İçerik

Stating that the Transcranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS) method can create changes in brain activity by targeting deep brain regions with short ultrasonic stimuli, Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “The most frequently treated disease with TPS, which has received European Union CE approval, is Alzheimer's type dementia. It can also be applied to patients with milder cognitive problems who have not yet progressed to Alzheimer's type dementia.” Prof. Dr. Metin, a specialist who reported significant improvements in patients' cognitive performance after TPS in studies conducted, stated that TPS has no serious side effects in suitable patients.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin made statements about the mechanism of action, application method, safety, and potential benefits of TPS (Transcranial Pulse Stimulation) treatment applied in Alzheimer's disease, in addition to drug therapy.

**Benefits can be gained from TPS in Alzheimer's progressing despite drug treatment!**

Reminding that Alzheimer's disease is a chronic and progressive condition, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “Patients' cognitive functions gradually decline.”

Prof. Dr. Metin stated that drug treatments offer a limited treatment option, adding, “In other words, the progression of the disease cannot be completely halted with drug treatment; it can only be slowed down to some extent. TPS treatment can be applied, and its benefits utilized, in patients whose disease continues to progress and whose symptoms increase despite receiving drug treatment.”

**TPS can change brain activity by stimulating deep brain regions **

Providing information about the Transcranial Pulse Stimulation device, briefly called TPS, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “TPS is a device that works on the principle of changing brain activity by delivering very short ultrasonic waves to the brain. In this respect, TPS is included in the treatment group called neuromodulation therapies.”

Noting that transcranial magnetic stimulation, also known as TMU or TMS, can be given as an example of neuromodulation therapies, Prof. Dr. Metin continued his words as follows:

“The TPS method sends very short ultrasonic stimuli into the brain. In this way, it can reach much deeper brain regions that other neuromodulation methods cannot. Thus, it can create changes in brain activity by stimulating deeper brain regions compared to other neuromodulation methods. In the application of the TPS method, the patient sits in a comfortable chair that does not bother them, holding the stimulating head of the TPS device. Through this headpiece, stimuli are sent to various regions of the patient's head. TPS treatment can also be applied in different diseases. However, the most frequently treated disease, which has received European Union CE approval, is Alzheimer's type dementia. It can also be applied to patients with milder cognitive problems who have not yet progressed to Alzheimer's type dementia.”

**Significant improvements in patients' cognitive performance observed with the TPS method! **

Prof. Dr. Barış Metin stated that the treatment usually consists of a total of 6 sessions, three sessions per week for two weeks. “The treatment is performed by personnel who have received the necessary training and passed safety tests. With the patient's MRI images, the areas to be applied in the brain are determined, and stimuli are applied to these areas by trained personnel. A total of 6,000 pulses are administered in one session.” he said.

Prof. Dr. Metin noted that studies conducted with this method have found significant improvements in patients' cognitive performance, adding, “Patients and their relatives frequently ask if this treatment has any side effects. Generally, no side effects are reported in patients, and it does not pose a safety risk.”

**TPS is a method directly approved for Alzheimer's disease! **

Pointing out that fewer sessions are applied with the TPS method compared to TMU, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “Unlike TMU, it is a method directly approved for Alzheimer's disease.”

Assessing in terms of risk factors, Prof. Dr. Metin emphasized that this treatment should not be applied to patients who have recently experienced a brain hemorrhage or stroke, concluding his words as follows:

“Apart from these, it can be applied to many patients. It should not be applied to patients with a brain pacemaker or hearing implant inside the head. If there has been no recent stroke or brain hemorrhage and no device is present inside the brain, this treatment can be safely applied. The primary application area of TPS treatment is Alzheimer's disease.”
