## Özet

**British author Joanna Williams shared her experiences in the UK in her book “The Destructive Impact of Transgender Ideology,” published by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Publications.**

**In her book, British author Williams pointed out that despite the low number of transgender individuals relative to the general population, the number of children identified as transgender, especially girls, is rapidly increasing.**

**From the book: “There have been year-on-year increases in the number of children referred by doctors to the NHS’s Gender Identity Development Service. Between 2018 and 2019, the number of 13-year-olds referred increased by 30 percent compared to the previous year, while the number of 11-year-olds increased by 28 percent. The youngest patient was just three years old.”**

**Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who questioned the basis of anti-gender theses and translated and edited the book, stated: “The building block of society is the family. Saying no to a perspective that takes marriage out of being a companionship and reduces it to sexuality is a social responsibility…”**

British author Joanna Williams’ book “The Destructive Impact of Transgender Ideology,” published by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Publications, draws attention to globally debated concepts such as social gender, biological sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

## **Saying no to a perspective that reduces marriage to sexuality is a social responsibility…**

In the introduction section, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector-Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who translated and edited the book, stated that the ideology of genderlessness, which emerged as a reaction to gender discrimination, is a post-industrial inquiry, adding, “The desire to live one’s life freely is commendable, but saying no to a perspective that takes marriage out of being a companionship and reduces it to sexuality is a social responsibility. The building block of society is the family. Wanting a family-less society without dual genders is as illogical as wanting a body without cells.”

## **“In a family without a set of values, a child cannot learn to manage themselves” **

In the section with the sub-heading “Will we accept unisex toilet use?” in the book, Prof. Dr. Tarhan expressed the following views:

“In a family without a set of values, a child cannot learn to manage themselves. In a child-centered family, the child becomes selfish and learns that their emotions have power over them. The correct thing is for them to learn that they have power over their emotions. A child learns to manage values in a family environment that provide many social and emotional skills such as respecting the opposite sex, compassion instead of arrogance, empathy instead of selfishness, truthfulness as a virtue instead of lying, keeping promises, respecting the rights of others, helpfulness, anger management, and stress management. One of these is learning to manage emotions related to the opposite sex. A child who is not the captain of all these emotions cannot be their own leader.

## **“True freedom is to be free from negative and malevolent emotions”**

Parents or teachers now ask children ‘How do you feel about being a boy or a girl?’ and if they don’t like being one or the other, they say ‘change.’ Just like asking how you feel about lying, being selfish, or using substances. Emotions are dominant over reason in children. Reason should be the captain of emotions. In neuroscience, this is called frontal lobe training. It is unique to humans. In old terminology, it is called will training. True freedom is to be free from negative and malevolent emotions, that is, to be able to manage wild and primitive emotions. The two wild emotions emphasized by Freud are eroticism and aggression. If a child cannot learn this, they will have a life without inner discipline, conscientiously irresponsible, anomic, meaning without norms.”

## **British author suggests “banning puberty blockers for everyone under 18”**

British author Joanna Williams listed her recommendations in the introduction section of the book as follows:

“Both the UK Government and the Scottish Parliament should declare a moratorium on all reforms to the Gender Recognition Act for at least the duration of this parliament.

The prescription of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to anyone under the age of 18 should be immediately banned.

## **Social transition should not be allowed…**

No child should be allowed to ‘socially transition’ at school (i.e., change their name, pronouns, uniform, or use changing rooms and toilets designated for members of the opposite sex) without their parents’ permission.”

## **“Transgenderism was not only accepted but often supported”**

The book emphasized a distinction between transgenderism and transgender individuals, continuing as follows:

“The term transgenderism is used to refer to an ideological movement that challenges sex-based rights and actively promotes the idea that one’s gender identity has no connection to their anatomy.

Transgenderism was not only accepted but often supported in important public institutions such as education, healthcare, social services, police, and prison services.

## **“This report investigates the reasons for the rise of transgenderism”**

Whereas once counselors were approached by middle-aged men with a history of cross-dressing, today it is young girls who are most likely to seek advice on transitioning. Institutions captured by a trans-genderism ideology cannot defend women’s sex-based rights or protect children who mistakenly view gender change as a solution to a range of personal or social problems they may encounter. This report investigates the causes of the rise of transgenderism and its impact on the lives of women and children.”

## **“The intersex phenomenon occurs in fewer than 2 out of every 10,000 births”**

In the chapter of the book titled “Changing attitudes towards sex and gender,” the following views were summarized:

“Today, intersex (dual-sex syndrome) is specifically defined as a condition where chromosomal sex is inconsistent with phenotypic sex, or where the phenotype cannot be classified as male or female. Far from being common as suggested by transsexual activists, the intersex phenomenon occurs in fewer than 2 out of every 10,000 births.”

## **“Children have begun to be at the center of many debates regarding transgender issues”**

In the British author’s book, it was stated that “Transgenderism is a new invention,” and attention was also drawn to the following:

“Children have begun to be at the center of many debates regarding transgender issues. Children seem to prove the claim that transgender is a naturally occurring and ever-present phenomenon, so much so that we forget how recently transgender children have been incorporated into the popular imagination.”

## **“The transgender child remains a controversial figure”**

The book points out that the existence of the transgender child began to gain acceptance outside of expert and activist cliques only since 2015, adding, “Since then, the existence of children experiencing a mismatch between their gendered essences and their anatomies is now accepted without question by many social workers, teachers, psychiatrists, and health professionals. Nevertheless, the transgender child remains a controversial figure.”

## **The youngest child referred to the Gender Identity Development Service in the UK is 3 years old…**

British author Joanna Williams, in her book, noted that despite the low number of transgender individuals relative to the general population, the number of children identified as transgender, especially girls, is rapidly increasing, and continued in the book:

“There have been year-on-year increases in the number of children referred by doctors to the NHS’s (UK National Health Service) Gender Identity Development Service. Between 2018 and 2019, the number of 13-year-olds referred increased by 30 percent compared to the previous year, while the number of 11-year-olds increased by 28 percent. The youngest patient was just three years old. Between 2008-2018, there was a 4,400 percent increase in the number of girls referred for treatment. Three-quarters of all children seeking help to change their gender are now girls.”

## **“Children and adolescents frequently change their minds about who they are and what kind of adult they want to be one day during the growth process”**

In the book “The Destructive Impact of Transgender Ideology,” the British author also provides the following information:

“Children and adolescents frequently change their minds about who they are and what kind of adult they want to be one day during the growth process. It is possible that some children who begin to see themselves as transsexual are merely experimenting or going through a phase. A danger of positive affirmation is that it risks solidifying this new identity, thus making it harder for the child to change their mind at a later date. A child who begins to see themselves as transsexual may be experiencing social or emotional problems that predate their gender identity concerns.”

## **“Has a harmful effect on the lives of women and children”**

In the Conclusion section of the book, the British author also stated, “Transgender ideology, as opposed to the existence of transgender individuals, has a harmful effect on society in a broader sense, and especially on the lives of women and children.”
