## Özet

Noting that Parkinson's disease is a disease of old age, Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı states that the disease usually manifests its symptoms over the age of 65.

## İçerik

Falls in old age must be taken into consideration

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı stated that the initial form of Parkinson's, which appears relatively more frequently in men than in women, is a tremor observed in the thumb of one hand. He added that other symptoms include slowness in movements, walking with small steps, leaning forward over time, and the disappearance of the arm-swinging movement, which is referred to as asocial movement. Tarlacı emphasized that falls observed in advanced age should also be taken into consideration and a neurologist should be consulted.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı made evaluations regarding what should be known about Parkinson's disease in his statement on April 11, World Parkinson's Day.

Pay attention to tremor in the thumb

Noting that Parkinson's disease is a disease of old age, Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said,

“It usually manifests its symptoms over the age of 65. It appears relatively more frequently in men than in women, and its initial form is generally a tremor in one hand. We medically call tremor as tremor. It usually manifests itself as a tremor observed in the thumb of one hand. When this tremor is visible even from the outside, the disease can be diagnosed.”

Movements slow down, steps shorten

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı noted that approximately 1-2 years after the onset of tremor, a slowing of the patient's movements is observed, stating, "It manifests itself with symptoms of motor deficiency such as difficulty sitting and standing, shortening of steps while walking, and not swinging the arms. In more advanced stages, it can progress to a level where daily life becomes dependent."

Seen in 5 percent over the age of 65

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı stated that the biggest cause of Parkinson's disease is age, saying, "Parkinson's is a disease that appears with age. It is a disease of old age because it can be seen in 5 percent of the population over the age of 65. At the age of 75, Parkinson's disease can appear in almost 20 percent of the population. It is an age-related disease, but it is not a disease that appears in all aging individuals. It is a motor deficiency disease that appears in some people due to certain factors, especially in the motor regions of the brain that provide movement balance and adjustments. It is a disease caused by the rapid aging of the brain's motor regions."

Probability increases in men

Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı also touched upon the factors causing Parkinson's disease, stating, "Male gender is an important factor. If you are male, your likelihood of having Parkinson's is higher. If you live in a village or rural area, drink well water, smoke, or have been exposed to agricultural pesticides, your likelihood of developing Parkinson's is higher than for those not exposed to these factors."

Falls in advanced age should be taken into consideration

Noting that one of the most important and often overlooked symptoms of Parkinson's is falls that occur in the elderly, Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said, "Usually, an excuse is found for this. Such as, 'They tripped over a chair, tripped over a carpet and fell…' These patients are mostly treated in orthopedic clinics for hip fractures, but upon closer inspection, it can be determined that they are actually experiencing falls due to the weakening of movement and balance disorder caused by Parkinson's. We advise relatives of patients to consult neurologists for frequently occurring falls."

Neurology specialist Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı added that other symptoms include tremor, shortening of steps, walking with small steps, leaning forward over time, and the disappearance of the arm-swinging movement, referred to as asocial movement.

Diet protecting cardiovascular health is recommended

Pointing out the importance of nutrition in Parkinson's disease, Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said, "A diet that protects cardiovascular health is important. Just like the slowing of body movements, bowel movements also slow down. Constipation is frequent. Therefore, they should consume a diet rich in fiber, and foods that increase bowel movements and retain fluid internally, such as apricots and figs. Plenty of seafood and calcium are also important."

Parkinson is a manageable disease

Underlining that Parkinson's is a manageable disease rather than a treatable one, Prof. Dr. Sultan Tarlacı said, "Brain pacemakers or drug treatments are used in suitable patients. But Parkinson's is actually managed, not cured. Medications have certain effects and side effects depending on the patient's condition. Their effects sometimes last 4-6 hours. The patient or their relatives should monitor themselves and record periods of ineffectiveness. Regular exercise, cycling, or swimming should be done. If a wheeled bicycle cannot be used, it may be difficult, so pedaling on a stationary bike for half an hour to 45 minutes should be done. Sleep should be regular and of good quality. Poor sleep significantly increases the patient's complaints the next day," he warned.
