Üsküdar University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that university life leaves a mark on a person’s life, plants seeds in their soul, and these develop in the future. He added, “As a university, aware of this, we strived to be both a good example and a good guide for our youth. We tried to teach not only technical and vocational skills but also human values to young people. I hope they will use this knowledge in their future lives.” Tarhan advised the new graduates by saying, “Have a purpose in life. Accurately distinguish between what is possible and what can be done. Stay away from lies, arrogance, and selfishness, maintain your sense of accountability.” Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, in her speech, emphasized that the ambition to earn money without producing can turn us into tools of capitalism, and therefore, we must produce effectively. At the graduation ceremony held at Ataşehir Ülker Sports and Event Hall, 10th-year associate, undergraduate, and postgraduate graduates experienced excitement and enthusiasm together. This year, 7,048 Üsküdar University graduates transitioned to professional life. The ceremony, attended by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Furkan Tarhan and Tarhan - İDER Foundation Board Member Fırat Tarhan, also saw the presence of Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk, Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy, Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, Rector’s Advisors Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zelka, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan, Prof. Dr. Tayfun Uzbay, Prof. Dr. İsmail Barış, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, among other academics. Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “You can free us from the prejudice that ‘geography is destiny’.” Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör delivered the first address of the magnificent ceremony, starting her opening speech by telling the new graduates, “As of today, you are undertaking a great responsibility.” Güngör continued, “We are always by your side, but now you are on your own, free individuals. You are undertaking a great responsibility towards your family, your homeland, and humanity from today onwards. If you become conscious and responsible individuals, you can free the geography we live in from the prejudice that ‘geography is destiny,’ which Western capitalist powers have tried to make us believe for centuries.” she said. Prof. Dr. Güngör: “The ambition to earn money without producing turns us into tools of capitalism; we must produce effectively.” Stating that we must first be responsible to ourselves, Güngör said, “As of today, we are purifying ourselves from clichés and discourses like ‘I can’t do it, I won’t succeed, I wasn’t given an opportunity, I would if I were given one, but my rights are not equal to others.’ We set out with the belief ‘I can do it, I can succeed, because I am talented, I received a good education, my capacity is as high as individuals in Western countries.’ You are individuals who have graduated from university in this country, proven your intellectuality and professional capacity, and you have a document proving this in your hand. Please let’s turn this document into concrete production. As young people who have graduated from university, our first priority is to serve the development and progress of our Turkey, adhering to our Republic’s values and under the light of science and the guidance of reason. I am taking your word on this today. Now you have the responsibility and duty to speak about our country, humanity, the course of the world, and at the same time, to contribute effectively. The ambition to earn money without simply producing turns us into tools of capitalism; we must produce effectively. I wish you all success in your future lives, may your path be open.” she concluded. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Alongside technical skills, we also tried to teach human values to young people.” Üsküdar University Founding Rector and Chairman of the Executive Board Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan addressed the families attending the ceremony in his opening speech. Tarhan said, “Mothers, fathers, you entrusted your children to us. We did our best to raise them well. We tried to help them walk with their heads held high and to be well-educated under the guidance of science and Anatolian wisdom.” Referring to unforgettable memories from university life, Tarhan stated, “It leaves a mark on a person’s life, plants seeds in their soul, and these develop in the future. As a university, aware of this, we strived to be both a good example and a good guide for our youth. For them, there is now a transition to a new way of life. They will face different realities of life. In universities, high school education life always focuses on technical and academic skills. Because we realized this, we initiated the first applications in the world not only for technical and vocational skills but also for them to learn life skills, emotional and social skills. We started before universities like Harvard and Yale. We tried to explain human values with their justifications to young people within an approach that includes the concepts of being a good person, goodness, and happiness, also known as positive psychology. I hope they will use this knowledge in their future lives,” he said. Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “We are carrying out important work for Turkey’s global competitiveness.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that Üsküdar University has graduated a total of 34 thousand students in 10 years, adding, “This year, we are graduating 7,048 students. Currently, 24 thousand students are studying at our university, and we want to continue our path in the best possible way. We want to reach out to more young people. In the earthquake we experienced on February 6th, 2 of our students passed away. May their souls rest in peace, and may their places be in heaven. I extend my condolences to the families of our two young people from here.” Tarhan stated that Üsküdar University has received new labels from the global indexing institution Times Higher Education in areas such as research, innovation, social impact, education quality, and entrepreneurship. He emphasized, “Among the labels, one is very interesting, and I want to highlight it: the label for justice, peace, and strong institutions. These are United Nations labels. We became the 2nd university in Turkey and the 101st in the world. This is a label obtained as a result of the efforts of our lecturers, students, and project team at our university, and we want to continue these. Similarly, we entered the top 500 universities in the world in a separate research index. We are 398th in the world. In another area, UNESCO and TWAS declared us a center of excellence in neuroscience. This was a first in Turkey. We are doing important work for Turkey’s global competitiveness. One of these is the project to examine the genes of two astronaut candidates selected from Turkey being assigned to our university. Our lecturers have started working on this. It is a project we are conducting with NASA, where we will track and report changes in the astronauts’ genes during their time in space.” he said. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Our life story is written by the choices we make.” Tarhan continued his speech by offering advice to young people, saying, “I want to give young people a few pieces of information that will be useful in their lives. One of them is to definitely have a purpose in life. If a ship that has left the harbor in stormy weather has no purpose, if it doesn’t know where it’s going, the wind will drag it. But the wind helps a ship with a purpose. Life events and stresses help people with a purpose. It drags aimless people. Secondly, how you want something is as important as what you want. Life, in fact, is the sum of our choices. Our life story is written by the choices we make. It is always necessary to strive to make the right choices and decisions; this is called having a vision and a mission. Vision is focusing on what can be, while mission is focusing on what can be done. Being able to distinguish between what is possible and what can be done is very important in life,” he said. “If you fill a room with all the evils in human life, three things open its door: lies, arrogance, and selfishness.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that while these behaviors may provide temporary benefits, they will lead to losses in the medium and long term. Tarhan added, “Therefore, staying away from lies, arrogance, and selfishness is very important for the decisions you will make and the choices you will take in life. Another important issue is the sense of accountability. Having a kind of mental jury in your conscience, having a sense of internal control, protects you from error. This feeling is the sense of accountability. What protects a person from error is not their good intentions, patriotism, or piety. Therefore, maintaining a sense of accountability as an inner guardian is very valuable on your life journey,” he advised. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Our life is the sum of our choices…” Tarhan concluded his remarks as follows: “It is very important for you to be a person who creates added value not only for yourself but also for the society you live in, your homeland, and humanity. Everything that can be questioned is scientific. It is very important for a person to have high and spiritual values and religious standards to be successful and happy. Reminding you again that our life is the sum of our choices, I wish you all success. I hope you continue your journey with the same excitement and passion after graduation.” Plaques and gifts were presented to successful students Plaques and gifts were also presented to the students who achieved success in the ceremony. The top three graduates at the undergraduate level, Atiye Ebrar Korkmaz, Merve Küçük, Elifgül Ak Engin, Çiğdem Nur Engin, and Zeynep Bal, received their plaques and gifts from Üsküdar University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Furkan Tarhan, Founding Member of the Board of Trustees Mustafa Ataş, and Rector’s Advisor Halide İncekara. Associate degree students who achieved success, Hazal Kalender, Fatmanur Yıldız, Sevgi Yaşar, Kardelen Bekiroğlu, and Büşra Dinlemez, received their plaques from Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, and Tarhan-İDER Foundation Board Member Fırat Tarhan. 2017 graduate Taşkın, “I invite everyone to show compassion to themselves.” Özgenur Taşkın, a Specialist Clinical Psychologist at NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, who graduated from Üsküdar University’s Psychology (English) Department in 2017, gave a speech to share her post-graduation experiences. “I read and researched what paths successful people have taken and came to a conclusion,” said Taşkın, stating that everyone has different paths. Taşkın offered the following advice to the graduates: “My path was through the compassion I showed myself. Currently, our graduates may be excited or anxious about finding a job, pursuing further education, or starting a master’s program, but based on my own experience, I invite each of you to practice showing self-compassion and being supportive.” Successful athletes were not forgotten! The sports teams of Üsküdar University, which achieved significant successes in their branches, were also not forgotten at the ceremony. Thank you certificates were presented by Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan to the university’s athletes in football, women’s and men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, Korfball, Taekwondo, Wushu, and fencing. Thanks to ‘Haydi Tut Elimi Association’ for their help in the earthquake region Immediately after the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes on February 6th, the ‘Haydi Tut Elimi Association’ (Come Hold My Hand Association) was established by Üsküdar University students to deliver aid to the region and households in need, virtually declaring a mobilization. At the graduation ceremony, thank you certificates were presented by Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör to the students and academics who did not cease their efforts in the region. Emotional moments were experienced Mücella Akın, the mother of Psychology Department student Anıl Akın, who passed away due to illness while continuing his education, experienced and created emotional moments at the ceremony. Mücella Akın, unable to hold back her tears, made a speech, saying, “I am very sad for what my Anıl experienced and what he could not experience. But he was very happy at school, and I thank all the teachers and management. I know he is watching us here.” Marriage proposal tradition continued The 10th-term graduation ceremony also witnessed a marriage proposal. Simge Suçun, a graduate of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Health Management, was proposed to on stage by her boyfriend. While the couple appeared very excited, the audience applauded and supported the young couple. Caps were thrown The new graduates, coming onto the stage one by one, received their graduation certificates. Following the “Flag and Pennant Handover” ceremony coordinated by Lecturer Ümit Ertem, the graduates collectively recited the graduation oath under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Konrot, Head of the Department of Speech and Language Therapy. Afterwards, the graduates descended from the stage and threw their caps. The graduation ceremony, filled with exciting and enthusiastic moments, concluded with a DJ performance.
