Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, President of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), delivered the first lecture of the new academic year. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar University, noting that two types of identities have emerged in society from the Ottoman Empire to the present day, stated that Turkey has experienced fluctuations between these two poles, leading to cultural confusion. Tarhan, who evaluated this situation as an identity crisis, added that there are things to be done to overcome this identity crisis in the 100th year of the Republic. Üsküdar University, which set out as our country's first thematic university in the fields of behavioral sciences and health, and has pioneered many academic studies in various fields, especially medicine, health, science, and technology, officially opened its 2023-2024 Academic Year with a ceremony. Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal gave a presentation titled 'Innovative Science and Technology Approach Against Difficulties Requiring Urgent Solutions'. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan delivered the opening speech The opening speech of the ceremony, held at the Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall of Üsküdar University Central Campus, was delivered by Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Üsküdar University. Starting his speech by saying, “May our new academic year be auspicious,” Tarhan stated that as the corridors became lively with students, the university atmosphere was palpable, and universities are not just places where knowledge is transferred, but actually areas for socialization and cultural exchange. We owe a great deal to that founding staff… Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the opening ceremony coincided with the Republic's 100th Anniversary celebrations, “During the occupation of Istanbul, a movement emerged in Anatolia, a movement silently supported by the Istanbul government of that time, as historians also say… We owe a great deal to the founding staff of that movement. We owe a great deal to the founding leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the military cadres, to all of them.” he said. Our cultural confusion still continues Highlighting the importance of celebrating the Republic's 100th Anniversary, Tarhan stated that events such as transitioning from one form of governance to another are traumatic, and such events must be overcome correctly and healthily. Tarhan, explaining that while transitioning from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, an empire with a great social structure and value, which governed the Middle East harmoniously for 400-500 years and left beautiful traces, was handed over, said, “When we left such an ancestor and established the Republic, we couldn't experience our grief; we turned it into complete mourning. As a result, our cultural confusion still continues.” Tarhan pointed out that the polarization in society, the polarization of lifestyles, would improve by making peace with the past, by seeing both the pros and cons of the past, and stated that there was an attempt to transition by disregarding the past. There is much to be done to overcome the identity crisis in the Republic's 100th Year Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted: “One of the reasons for the emergence of two types of identity in society right now is this. One is a society that has completely sanctified the West, and another group consists of those who anachronistically defend the Ottoman Empire purely in a traditionalist way… Turkey is a kind of cultural confusion experiencing tides between these two poles… This is an identity crisis. It is a cultural identity crisis, a sociological identity crisis. In its 100th year, there are things to be done to overcome this identity crisis.” Tarhan, also explaining that it is not like the founding period of the Republic, continued: “Acting as if we are experiencing the same conjuncture in the world today as in the early years of the Republic, defending a totalitarian approach by saying 'you will cut off 100 people's heads, and these people will be corrected this way' is anachronism. The Republic also has its own evolution. It democratized in 1950, and now it is becoming more global. The foundation of the Republic is freedom of expression. Where there is freedom of expression, ideas clash. When ideas clash, truths emerge. For this reason, it is very important for us to transition towards a Republic with a liberal Republic and a liberal democracy.” UN Hinders Solution in Gaza Tarhan, also drawing attention to the Israel-Palestine issue in his speech, said that the structure of the UN hinders the solution in Gaza. Tarhan stated that the UN should be like a World Parliament, noting that currently, the UN has an authoritarian and totalitarian style of governance. Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “In the Republic's 100th Year, we would have wished for at least 5-6 physics, chemistry, or mathematics awards to emerge from this geography, but unfortunately, they did not.” Emphasizing that being able to ask the right question is more important than answering a question, Tarhan added that Turkey would overcome its identity confusion. Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “We are preparing young people for the future” In her speech, Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, Rector of Üsküdar University, also stated that as a university, they have accomplished much in a short time, preparing young people for the future with a human-centered perspective and strong academic staff. Speaking to students with a presentation titled “Innovative Science and Technology Approach Against Difficulties Requiring Urgent Solutions,” Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal said, “I wish the 2023-2024 academic year to be auspicious, not just in words but in action. I found this invitation meaningful because it is the hundredth anniversary of our Republic. If we understand correctly, we will talk about the future Turkish century.” Our mission is to produce science, technology, and innovation! Mandal continued, “While preparing for the next century of our Republic, we are unfortunately also witnessing what is happening in Gaza.” “There are students and faculty members at the university who have lost their loved ones. I pray for God's mercy upon them. It is not possible to remain a spectator to this situation, but it is also important what and how we will do, instead of remaining spectators. Our duty here, in terms of representation, is to produce science, technology, and innovation. The need for this is now much greater than in the past. In the past, it was a choice; now it is a necessity. Producing more science, transforming science into value, is more within our responsibility than yesterday. Training more students than yesterday, and while training students, not just transferring knowledge, but enabling them to use that knowledge…” Prof. Dr. Mandal reminded that 18 undergraduate students from Üsküdar University are TÜBİTAK scholarship holders, and stated that between 2018-2023, 233 people from Üsküdar University received qualified human development support. Üsküdar University Science Awards Presented At the ceremony, the 'Science Leadership Award' was presented to Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, President of TÜBİTAK, by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan; the 'Young Scientist Award' was presented to Dr. Lecturer Cihan Taştan by Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal and Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör; and the 'Promising Scientist Award' was given to Üsküdar University students and their advisors for their developed projects and received awards. Vice-Rectors Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy, Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, and Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk presented the awards. ‘Üsküdar University Special Award’ presented to the Turkey A National Volleyball Team At the ceremony, the 'Üsküdar University Special Award' was also presented to National Volleyball Player and Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, Department of Visual Communication Design 1st Year Student İlkin Aydın, on behalf of the Turkey A National Volleyball Team, by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Üsküdar University Furkan Tarhan, and Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör. She gifted her signed jersey, which she wore during the championship. National volleyball player İlkin Aydın, also a student of Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, Department of Visual Communication and Design, said in her speech at the ceremony, “I think you know how difficult it is to both have a profession and attend school in Turkey. Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity, because even though sports become a profession, it can always come to a halt due to potential injuries. That's why I always wanted to have a diploma in my hand. I have been striving until now, and I am very happy to be at Üsküdar University right now. I thank everyone who gave me this opportunity.” They donned their robes at the ceremony An Academic Promotion and Robing Ceremony was also held within the scope of the New Academic Year Opening Ceremony. At the ceremony, academics promoted from Associate Professorship to Professorship, to Associate Professorship, and those awarded doctorates were robed. The ceremony concluded with a family photo.
