## **Prof. Nazife Güngör: “Humanity is neglecting human values by exaggerating material values”**

Prof. Nazife Güngör, Rector of Üsküdar University, giving the opening speech of the ceremony, emphasized that the High Human Values Award has been honoring works that contribute to society and humanity for years.

“Although the fundamental mission of universities is to provide education and scientific services, demonstrating sensitivity to social problems and producing solutions is also an important duty.” said Prof. Güngör. She added that academicians and scientists should conduct their work not only to generate knowledge but also to contribute to the building of humanity.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/nazife-gungor-2-260326095653.png)

Prof. Nazife Güngör continued her speech as follows:

“While humanity builds great civilizations and social systems today, a process is underway where human values are increasingly pushed into the background. Unfortunately, the rise of material and monetary values has led to a decrease in human values. All values produced by humans should not contradict fundamental human values; it is essential that humanity does not diminish while creating values. However, at the point we have reached today, in modern civilization, violence and pleasure-oriented behaviors are becoming increasingly widespread, and values that define people are turning into tools of pleasure. Humanity excessively prioritizes material values, glorifying them as if worshipped, and in this process, disregards human values.

Despite this, one should not despair. Our effort to heal our souls must continue by strengthening our minds, education, and emotional abilities. The High Human Values Award aims to offer a small but meaningful contribution on this path to recovery. As a university, we will continue to contribute to this effort to protect and develop humanity's values. We thank our esteemed guests who honored the university by accepting this award, and we extend our regards.”

## **Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “Values are like ‘traffic signs’ that touch life, serving as guides”**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, President of Üsküdar University and Chairman of the Executive Board, stated in his opening speech that the High Human Values Awards began to be given to draw attention to the importance of remaining human, especially in the digital age.

Prof. Tarhan, noting that while humanity's virtues and values are genetically present from birth, they only develop through learning in a social environment, said, “Therefore, the transmission of values plays a critical role in building children's personalities and characters. The digital age replaces families, making it difficult for children to grow up with values. Universities and educational institutions are responsible for explaining to society the importance of investing in mental health, building trust, and guiding technology correctly. Technology is neutral; when used correctly, it contributes to humanity, but when used incorrectly, it can be harmful. That is why values are like ‘traffic signs’ that touch life, serving as guides.”

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/nevzat-tarhan-2-260326095835.png)

## **Prof. Tarhan: “When children are not taught values, they can grow up without virtue, even if they are intelligent and successful” **

Tarhan, emphasizing that building social peace begins by showing children the importance of being virtuous, said, “In a capitalist system where being self-serving might seem profitable in the short term, children should be taught that being virtuous will provide real benefit in the medium and long term.”

Tarhan, noting that the heritage of human values is rapidly depleting, underlined that honesty is the most valuable currency, and trust is the highest respect, adding:

“When these values are not taught, children can be intelligent and successful, but they might grow up as individuals without virtue. For example, a smart child could become a hacker as a computer engineer; a medical school graduate could participate in groups like newborn gangs, or a chemical engineer could produce prohibited substances. Therefore, character and virtue education at an early age is critically important.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/nevzat-tarhan-3-260326095911.png)

Research shows that children begin to learn virtues, especially between the ages of 4 and 6. Learning sharing, cooperation, and empathy at these ages forms the foundation for them to become healthy and responsible individuals in the future. Educational systems should strengthen value transmission for this age group and invest in society.

The university aims to strengthen the spiritual connection of youth and society by standing against the loneliness, violence, and social changes of the digital age. On this path, teaching values and raising societal awareness through role models form the cornerstones of education and social responsibility.”

The first of the awards, presented to their recipients in alphabetical order, was given to Prof. Aysel Aziz, a writer who pioneered the establishment of quality, ethics, and accreditation awareness in communication faculties and guided the institutionalization and enhancement of academic quality in communication sciences in Türkiye through her work.

## **Prof. Aysel Aziz: “In today's technology-intensive world, protecting human values is even more important!”**

Prof. Aysel Aziz, whose award was presented by Prof. Nazife Güngör, Rector of Üsküdar University, and Ümraniye District Governor Yüksel Çelik, stated that receiving the High Human Values Award was not only a great honor but also carried significant responsibility for her. Aziz mentioned that after receiving this award, she began to re-evaluate the values she believed she possessed, describing this process as a kind of introspection, and said:

“I find Üsküdar University's emphasis on social values through these awards extremely meaningful. Universities should not be limited to providing education and producing science; they also need to make a social contribution.”

## **Prof. Aziz: “I have not come across an example of these awards”**

Aziz also underlined that the High Human Values Awards are a practice rarely seen in Türkiye and the world, stating, “I conducted research with the help of artificial intelligence as well, and I have not come across a similar example in this scope. This situation demonstrates the uniqueness and value of the university's work. In today's world, where technology, especially artificial intelligence, has become central to life, the protection of human values has become even more critical. Such initiatives remind society of the concept of virtue. I hope that Üsküdar University's efforts in this field will serve as an example for other institutions.”

## **High Human Values Award to Mother Nilgün Çiçek **

Within the scope of the 11th High Human Values Awards, the other name deemed worthy of an award was Nilgün Çiçek, who transformed motherhood into an example of human value with her extraordinary dedication, determination, and unwavering faith shown in her disabled son Muratcan Çiçek's educational and life journey.

Çiçek, who was invited to the stage with her son Muratcan, received her award from Prof. Mehmet Zelka, Rector's Advisor of Üsküdar University. Nilgün Çiçek said, “I thank those who deemed me worthy of this award. I am proud of my son.”

## **Asst. Prof. Ömer Demirbağ: “It is an honor to be on the same platform with Muratcan Çiçek” **

Asst. Prof. Ömer Demirbağ, an academician who contributed scientifically to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage through his long-term academic works in Turkish language and literature and influenced the development of literature, language, and cultural awareness, was also among the award recipients.

Asst. Prof. Demirbağ received his award from Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University. Asst. Prof. Demirbağ added that being deemed worthy of this award was extremely valuable to him, and he had the honor of being on the same platform with Muratcan Çiçek.

## **National footballer Arda Güler’s family also deemed worthy of High Human Values Awards**

Among the High Human Values awards recipients were the parents of national footballer Arda Güler, who plays for Real Madrid. Serap Güler and Ümit Güler were presented with an award for their value-based parenting approaches that guided Arda Güler's personality development, their dedicated support, and their strong family models serving as an example to society.

Father Güler received the award

## **“For the first time, I felt I had achieved something”**

Father Güler received his award from Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, President of Üsküdar University and Chairman of the Executive Board. Güler, observed to be proud, expressed his feelings with the following sentences:

“We have received invitations from many universities to date, but as a father, I did not see myself successful enough to speak in such an environment, so we postponed these invitations. For the first time, while receiving an award alongside such valuable people, I felt I had achieved something. I want to say a few things to my student friends; as parents, we didn't actually do much while standing by Arda. That is, your parents are already doing the same thing we did when guiding you in school selection and teacher selection. Don't miss this point. The difference is Arda's great love for what he does, his dedication, and the visibility of his field.”

## **“People love Arda, not because he is a good footballer; they love his character!”**

Father Ümit Güler expressed society's love for Arda with these words: “People say they love Arda very much, but not because Arda scored beautiful goals, played very well, or is in a very well-known team; they love his character. This is something very valuable, very important for a father, for a mother. We are trying not to spoil this.

I also want to mention this; last week, Arda scored a goal. This goal, yes, was a goal Arda worked very hard for, he was already dreaming of such a thing. But there's something else, I believe this; this goal was not scored with physics, strength, or power, but with the power of the people in Türkiye who pray for Arda. This also makes us very happy. Thank you all, thank you very much.”

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/taha-akyol-konusma-260326100912.png)

## **Journalist Taha Akyol: “Individuals who protect honesty and the feeling of shame become strong both morally and professionally!”**

Journalist-writer Taha Akyol was also among the recipients of the 11th High Human Values Awards. Akyol, who attended the ceremony with his wife, received his award from Prof. Nevzat Tarhan. In his speech, Akyol addressed the youth.

Akyol, posing the question, “You have 60 years ahead of you to reach my age. How will you live those 60 years?” emphasized that the decisions an individual makes on their life's journey will determine their future position.

Akyol noted that respect within society, professional success, and the quality of social relationships are shaped by the values and principles adopted at a young age, and said:

“In today's world, traditional values have weakened due to rapid industrialization, urbanization, and the impact of capitalism. While respect, love, and moral boundaries that once regulated social life are gradually disappearing, new values required by modern life have not yet fully settled. This situation has led to a process of lawlessness and loss of values, defined as ‘anomie’ in sociology. The weakening of values affects not only individual life but also the social structure, increasing polarization and making it difficult to form a common moral ground.

I especially want to dwell on honesty and the feeling of shame. These values form the foundation of social life. In the past, the feeling of shame felt in response to wrong behavior was an important mechanism that allowed individuals to regulate themselves. However, today this feeling has weakened. Individuals who preserve honesty and the feeling of shame achieve a stronger position not only morally but also in terms of professional success.”

## **Akyol: “We see Üsküdar University as the only institution that systematically addresses values”**

Akyol, stating that values in Türkiye have eroded so much that Üsküdar University is the only institution among over 200 universities that systematically addresses values education, said, “Before coming here, I read the 24 golden rules determined by the university. I especially want to focus on two of these values. The first is honesty, which we greatly need in society and the justice system. The second is the feeling of shame, which is often overlooked but extremely important. In many events I attended throughout my long career in journalism and writing, this is the first time I have seen the feeling of shame addressed as such a significant loss of value. In the past, we felt shame when we did something wrong; we were apprehensive of our family when we broke a neighbor's window or harmed a friend. Today, however, we face a serious problem like peer bullying. The insufficient transmission of family values to new generations is one of the important reasons for this situation.”

## **“Our Prof. Nevzat Tarhan presented a concrete example of a one-man revolution”**

Akyol, pointing out that individual effort and vision have a great impact on social transformation and that even a single person can be the pioneer of great changes, said, “Before I conclude my speech, I would like to mention Prof. Nevzat Tarhan. Jan Gutenberg, known as the founder of the printing press, printed the first Bible in Germany in 1444. He was not a scientist, but an iron master. However, realizing that people had difficulty accessing books, he used his creative intelligence and initiated a great transformation. This shows how important the principle of “innovativeness,” which is among the 24 values, is. A single person's observation and thought can lead to one of history's greatest revolutions. Indeed, sociologist Ziya Gökalp also defines the printing press as one of the greatest revolutions. Do not forget what one person can achieve in the next 60 years. This university founded by Prof. Nevzat Tarhan is a concrete example of this. Such value-based approaches are of great importance for the future of the individual and society. I wish you all great success.” Rhetorically he used these expressions.

Historian and writer Taha Kılınç, who created social awareness through his in-depth research on the Middle East and the Islamic world, was also among the award recipients.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/taha-kilinc-konusma-260326102225.png)

## **Taha Kılınç dedicated his award to the Uyghur Turks!**

Taha Kılınç, whose award was presented by Prof. Hikmet Koçak, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University, stated that being deemed worthy of such an award was a great honor and a responsibility for him.

In his speech, Taha Kılınç touched upon the events in East Turkestan:

“I believe one of the reasons this award was given to me was my journey to East Turkestan. East Turkestan is a distant geography where even Ramadan fasting cannot be observed, Tarawih prayers cannot be performed, and people's most fundamental rights and freedoms are hindered.

I had the opportunity to witness that atmosphere and those events, and upon my return, I wrote a travelogue. With your permission, I would like to dedicate this award to our distant brothers and sisters, the Uyghur Turks.”

The other two names deemed worthy of the award were the Baltaş couple.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/zuhal-baltas-konusma-260326101121.png)

## **Prof. Zuhal Baltaş: “The university offers an important platform for young people to discover and strengthen values!” **

Prof. Zuhal Baltaş, whose award was presented by Prof. Sevil Atasoy, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University, sincerely congratulated Üsküdar University for valuing human values and making it a principle, elevating it to a level that informs the public within the university, and undertaking the mission of educating its students in line with these values.

In her speech, Prof. Zuhal Baltaş stated, “I believe that an extremely important platform is offered for young people to discover which of these deeply profound values they possess, to analyze their own behaviors within this framework, and to develop action plans on how they can strengthen these values in areas where they are eroding in society.”

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/acar-baltas-konusma-260326101231.png)

## **Prof. Acar Baltaş: “When we can place the concepts of conscience development and success side by side, we can achieve our goals more healthily!”**

Prof. Acar Baltaş, whose award was presented by Prof. Sevil Atasoy, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University, and Halide İncekara, Rector's Advisor of Üsküdar University, reminded that they have been conducting studies centered on values in business life for over 20 years, stating, “In the early days when we started, talking about values in the business world was perceived almost like a foreign language. But today, seeing this approach integrated with life brings great satisfaction.”

Prof. Acar Baltaş stated that having contributed, even if small, to this process and seeing this contribution recognized with an award was a great happiness and privilege for him, and said:

“I believe that when we can place the concepts of conscience development and success side by side, we can achieve our goals more healthily. Academic success alone is not enough to be evaluated solely on grades, rankings, or competition. In addition; how much we share what we have, to whom we do good, to what extent we contribute to the success of others, and how much we can support those in need, are all as important as academic success.

When we can integrate this perspective into life, I believe we can overcome the difficult processes we face together and more strongly. I also thank the institutions that contribute to the spread of this understanding.”

## **Prof. İlber Ortaylı not forgotten **

Prof. İlber Ortaylı, one of the world's prominent historians, who was presented with an award at the 2nd High Human Values Awards ceremony in 2017 and recently passed away, was also commemorated at the ceremony. Ortaylı's speech from 2017 was shared with the participants.

![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/genel1-260326101451.png)

The ceremony, which saw intense interest and participation, was broadcast live on Üsküdar University Television ÜÜ TV and Üsküdar University's official Youtube account.

The ceremony concluded with a group photo session.
