## Özet

Experts state that the increasing incidents of violence today cannot be attributed to a single cause, and that psychological, sociological, and digital factors are effective together.

## İçerik

Emphasizing that youth and adolescence are the most fragile periods for identity development, Psychiatry Specialist Prof. Gül Eryılmaz said, “Digital tools have also led to a change in the ‘hero’ icons that adolescents emulate. While the understanding of a ‘strong hero’ used to be based on moral values, today this understanding has been replaced by a popularity-focused and absurd structure.” Prof. Eryılmaz stated that family communication has weakened and the effect of ‘technostress’ has left young people more alone, adding that a ‘security erosion’ has occurred in society, which increases the tendency towards violence.

Psychiatry Specialist Prof. Gül Eryılmaz from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about how digitalization, changing role models, weakening family ties, and global uncertainties set the stage for value erosion and increased violence among young people.

**Youth icons have become complicated, and values have eroded!**

Stating that many psychological, neurological, and sociological factors emerge when examining the causes of increasing violence today, Prof. Gül Eryılmaz said, “However, one of the most critical points is the changes during adolescence and youth, when identity development is most fragile.”

Prof. Eryılmaz noted that while children generally emulate their immediate surroundings, adolescents and young people often choose the outside world as a role model. “In the past, what we called ‘environment’ consisted of people we could touch and see. However, digital tools have eliminated these boundaries; now we can instantly connect with someone on the other side of the world. This situation has also led to a change in the ‘hero’ icons that adolescents emulate. Today, individuals who get more ‘likes’, are watched more, act more absurdly, or attract attention by swearing have become role models. While the understanding of a ‘strong hero’ used to be based on moral values, today this understanding has been replaced by a popularity-focused and absurd structure. Youth icons have become complicated, and values have eroded,” she stated.

**Families' protective shield and inclusive effect are weakening!**

Prof. Gül Eryılmaz reminded that in the past, the family was the safest refuge, the center of compassion and unity for the individual, stating, “However, today the family structure is also facing serious erosion.”

Emphasizing that screens have become like ‘digital pacifiers’ due to the situation called ‘technostress’, Prof. Gül Eryılmaz said, “This situation has reduced healthy bonds, communication, and in-depth conversations within the family. Research shows that more than 50% of young people bullied on social media do not tell their families about it. The answers young people give to the question ‘Why don't you tell?’ are thought-provoking: ‘they wouldn't understand me’, ‘they can't do anything anyway’, ‘and I'd get scolded on top of that’. This picture clearly demonstrates the weakening of the family's protective shield and inclusive effect,” she stated.

**Weakening family ties and global uncertainties lead to ‘security erosion’ that increases violence!**

Prof. Gül Eryılmaz stated that our perception of the world and our sense of psychological security have also been severely damaged, saying, “In the past, wars were only on battlefields; today, however, all kinds of conflicts, including economic crises, have infiltrated our homes through social media and television.”

Prof. Eryılmaz pointed out that the power displays and threatening language of world leaders reinforce the feeling of ‘we are not safe’ in individuals, stating, “As a result; the weakening of family bonds, the corruption of role models, and this ‘security erosion’ created by global uncertainties are the most fundamental factors paving the way for an increase in violent incidents,” she concluded.
