## Özet
Begüm Gamiş, Research Assistant at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Health Sciences, Child Development Department, made an evaluation regarding self-care development in early childhood.
## İçerik
It is important for children to acquire self-care skills such as dressing, eating, oral and dental hygiene, and toilet habits appropriate for their age. Experts, who offer advice to parents for the development of self-care skills, emphasize the importance of observation and being a role model. Experts explained which self-care skills children should have at each age.
Begüm Gamiş, Research Assistant at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Health Sciences, Child Development Department, made an evaluation regarding self-care development in early childhood.
Begüm Gamiş stated that self-care skills are daily tasks undertaken for children to be ready to participate in daily life activities (including dressing, undressing, eating, oral and dental hygiene, and toilet habits), and added, 'These skills are met by parents or caregivers from the child's birth, and with the child's physical maturity, it is expected that they can perform these skills independently.'
Begüm Gamiş noted that, as in all developmental areas, the skills expected to be acquired in self-care development vary with children's developmental levels, and these skills follow a complementary sequence, stating, 'What is important is to be aware of the child's developmental level and to support the child in acquiring the skills they are capable of during critical periods.'
**What self-care skills should be present according to age?**
Gamiş provided the following information regarding self-care skills observed at different ages:
**3 Years Old**
- Can wash hands (however, there is still a need for time to acquire the drying skill. Therefore, support should be provided for drying when necessary)
- Can eat with the help of a fork and spoon (it is important to choose utensils that will not cause any accidents)
- Can dress themselves without help (flexible clothes should be preferred for beginners)
- Can close a zipper with assistance.
**4-5 Years Old**
- Can wash hands and face
- Can button and unbutton large buttons on their own clothing (the size of the buttons is important for this skill; full mastery of the skill will be achieved by the end of age 6)
- Can use the correct utensils while eating
- Can help set the table with verbal prompts
- Can brush teeth
- Can dress themselves without help
- Can hang clothes on a hanger (support materials can be used for them to reach)
**6 Years Old**
- Can wash and dry hands and face (may need help washing other parts of their body)
- Can brush teeth properly
- Can dress and undress themselves appropriately for the weather without help
- Can tie shoelaces
- Can comb hair properly
- Can cut soft foods with a knife (it is especially important to create opportunities for this)
- Can take as much food as they want from a serving dish onto their plate and prepare their own food
- Can take responsibility for one of the daily chores - such as helping set the table
**Research Assistant Begüm Gamiş listed her recommendations for parents and caregivers for the acquisition of self-care skills as follows:**
1. Observe: Observe whether your child is physiologically and socio-emotionally ready to acquire skills during critical periods. Never force the child in this regard.
2. Give time, don't rush: Remember that development is a process. Therefore, give the child time to see, try, and examine each skill; do not rush. Be patient and compassionate by planning appropriate time and space for this.
3. Follow a sequence from simple to complex: Without forgetting that self-care skills follow a complementary sequence, start skill acquisition with simple steps appropriate for the child's level.
4. Allow children to experience and express their emotions: The expression of emotions constitutes one of the important steps in the healthy acquisition of skills. Talk to children frequently to help them express their emotions, and encourage them to express themselves by setting an example. Do not ignore emotions the child expresses in any way, and do not mock them.
5. Provide opportunities for them to try and examine the skill: Especially in the acquisition of toilet habits, allow them to examine their stool. It is very natural for a child to initially not want to separate from their stool, which they see as a part of themselves. Give them time to say goodbye to their stool in this regard. Similarly, in acquiring eating skills, allow the child to touch, smell, and taste foods.
6. Be a role model: Answer all the child's questions regarding skill acquisition and be a role model. Allow the child time to observe and imitate you.
7. Provide support when needed: Since self-care skills are one of the most important steps in a child gaining independence, provide support for skill acquisition only when the child feels the need. Always tell the child that you are not leaving them alone and that you can help when they want.
8. Utilize materials that facilitate skill acquisition: It is important to make the child's skill acquisition easier and the process enjoyable with different materials for each skill. For example, various books, toys, songs, etc. When choosing these facilitators, consider the child's age, developmental level, and interests.
9. Do not compare: Just as every child is unique, so is every child's development. Without disregarding individual differences, do not compare them with other children.
