## Özet

Experts state that women's friendships stand out as one of the important relationship networks that strengthen mental health through emotional sharing and social support.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol, stating that reliable friendships facilitate coping with stress, reduce feelings of loneliness, and support psychological resilience, said, “In psychology literature, social support is considered one of the most important protective factors against depression and anxiety.” However, Erol pointed out that not every friendship creates the same effect, emphasizing that critical and demeaning relationships can create a psychological burden. Erol underlined that in situations such as intense anxiety, depression, or trauma, professional psychological support should not be neglected alongside friend support.

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about how women's friendships affect mental health, the psychological consequences of healthy friendships versus unhealthy relationships, and excessive comparison.

**A significant portion of emotional needs in adulthood are met through friendships!**

İpek Erol, stating that humans exist by forming relationships from birth, said, “The feeling of trust, sense of belonging, and emotional regulation skills begin to develop in the first years of life within the relationship established with the caregiver.”

However, Erol stated that a significant portion of these needs in adulthood are met through friendships, and added, “Especially the friendships women form with each other hold an important place in mental health in terms of expressing emotions, coping with difficult life events, and supporting psychological resilience.”

**Reliable friendships facilitate coping with stress! **

Erol, pointing out that psychological well-being is not only composed of individual characteristics, but also that social support received from one's environment is an important determinant, said, “Empathetic listening, mutual emotional sharing, and the feeling of validation often seen in women's friendships can serve a protective function during periods of intense stress.”

Erol stated that being able to talk about an event with someone helps organize recurring thoughts in the mind, regulate emotions, and evaluate the event more realistically, and continued:

“Clinical observations also show that individuals with strong social support can develop more flexible coping strategies during crises. In psychology literature, social support is considered one of the most important protective factors against depression and anxiety. The presence of a trusted friend makes it easier for a person to share their burden and reduces the perception of loneliness. This also has biological reflections. Increased oxytocin release during safe social interactions can contribute to a more balanced functioning of the stress system; it can support a person feeling calmer and more secure.”

**Not every friendship strengthens mental health! **

İpek Erol, noting that not every friendship creates the same effect, said, “Relationships where one is constantly criticized, belittled, or made to feel worthless can increase a person's psychological burden instead of strengthening their mental health. The protective element is the quality of the relationship as much as its existence.”

Erol noted that in childhood, friendships develop naturally through common games and sharing the same environment, and said, “In adulthood, however, most of the time is allocated to work, family, and responsibilities. Opportunities to meet new people decrease, and the time required to build trust is also limited. As life experiences increase, people begin to be more selective about relationships. Past disappointments, breaches of trust, or a demanding pace of life can make it difficult to form new bonds. Nevertheless, friendships formed in adulthood, though they develop more slowly, can often be deeper and more lasting.”

**Social media makes comparison among women more visible! **

Erol, pointing out that according to Social Comparison Theory, people compare themselves with those around them to evaluate their own competencies, said, “This tendency is natural for everyone. However, when a person's self-worth is largely dependent on external validation, comparison can be experienced more intensely.”

Erol reminded that women are often evaluated by society based on appearance, youth, motherhood, career, relationship status, and caregiving roles, and stated, “The limited and competitive presentation of success criteria can make women feel as if they are competing for the same resources. Social media, by constantly showing selected success stories and idealized lives, makes these comparisons more visible. From an individual perspective, intense comparison is often an expression of worthlessness, inadequacy, and fear of rejection. When someone else's success is perceived as a threat, the problem often stems not from the other person's success, but from how the individual experiences their own self-worth.”

**Friendship and psychotherapy serve different needs! **

Erol, emphasizing that secure friendships foster cooperation rather than competition, said, “Empathy, mutual support, and the capacity for joint development are among the strongest effects of women's friendships on mental health.”

**Underlining that close friendships are an important source of support, Erol concluded her words as follows:**

“However, the emotional burden each relationship can carry is different. Constantly discussing the same problems can strain a friend's emotional capacity and disrupt the balance of the relationship. In healthy friendships, there are mutual boundaries as well as mutual support. Friendship and psychotherapy serve different needs. A friend is someone who walks beside you in life; a psychologist is an expert who accompanies mental processes within a scientific and ethical framework. In situations such as intense anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, significant loss of functionality, or suicidal thoughts, professional support should be a fundamental part of the process.”
