## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drawing attention to the negative effects of women's programs on individuals and society, stated that women are under the negative influence of women's programs. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluated the issue of women's awareness in society.

## **"A cultural chaos and conflict arise from women working within the accustomed patriarchal culture.”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, pointing to periods in the past when women were seen as property and the arrival of Islam, which granted women inheritance rights, divorce rights, and social rights, said: “Later, under the influence of Mesopotamian culture, some of those rights were lost in the Islamic world, and then a serious start was made regarding women's participation in working life, especially with the industrial revolution. Meanwhile, a cultural chaos and conflict arose from women working within that accustomed patriarchal culture. And movements concerning women's rights began due to the events that transpired.”

## **“Turkey granted these rights earlier than Europe”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the women's liberation movement became more prominent after 1960, saying: “The level of social equality between women and men in the world could only be reached in the 1960s. In America, there were debates in 1917 like 'What does your president think about women's right to vote?' Turkey granted these rights earlier than Europe in this regard. In Switzerland, the right to vote was granted in the 1970s.”

## **“Woman-man relationships were turned into woman-man wars”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that women have come a long way regarding equality in social rights and opportunities, saying: “But there are cultures in the world that are not ready for this change. In some cultures, problems arise because men are not ready for this. On the other hand, there is also an oscillation between extremes, excess and deficiency, between these two ends. The rightful movement of women's liberation, the feminist movement, which started in 1960, then went off track in the 1970s and 1980s. Woman-man relationships were turned into woman-man wars, and currently, divorce rates are much higher than marriage rates all over the world. The divorce rate in Turkey in the first 5 years is 38%. In Europe, it's around 60-70%, and even marriage has significantly decreased. Out-of-wedlock children are over 50% in many European countries.”

## **“Woman-man power struggles turned into personality wars”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also explained that woman-man power struggles turned into personality wars, stating: “This also damaged the institution of the family, and therefore complications are experienced. In other words, both the mother and the father need to do something better than being a good manager or a good business person. Raising a good child. If you don't raise good children, there will be no investment in the future. There is a tendency to shift towards an extreme that underestimates raising people, and this should not be ignored. That is, as in every event, the dosage is important.”

## **“Women and men are equal in rights and opportunities”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, using the expressions, “Women and men are equal in rights and opportunities, but not biologically equal,” stated the following:

“Because biologically, the blood circulating in a woman's body is four kilograms, while in a man it is six kilograms. Therefore, physical performance is not equal; there are such biological inequalities, which are due to biology. For example, in terms of empathy, women are ahead of men. In terms of communication skills, they are ahead of men. They are not biologically equal; they were created differently. Equality needs to be achieved by not ignoring this, because equality is not always fair. Giving a burden that a person cannot carry is not fair.”

## **“For social gender, he says 'acquired gender'. Society teaches it”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that gender should be divided into three, saying: “Firstly, biological gender, which is innate. The World Psychiatric Association has a definition; for biological gender, it says 'assigned gender'. For social gender, it says 'acquired gender'. Society teaches it. The identity known as sexual identity. The third is sexual orientation.”

## **“There is no third gender gene. Biologically, there is female and male gender”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that there was a large study on 477 thousand people in 2019 by universities from Oxford, Harvard, Toronto, and Australia regarding whether gender is biological or social, saying: “That is the largest genetic study in the world. It was published in a journal. It investigated whether there is a third gender gene. There is no third gender gene. Biologically, there is female gender, male gender, even chromosomes, but no gene. A third gender gene could not be found. There are some cases, but they are considered diseases. For example, there are also hermaphrodites. They have both female and male organs. The baby is born like this, if noticed, and if one is preferred, the child is operated on. They continue with that gender, but if they grow up unnoticed, the child later becomes intersex.”

## **“Violence against women is very high in societies that cannot tolerate women not being ostracized”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized that a woman should not see or feel herself as secondary or ostracized in social life, professional life, and at home, saying: “There are studies on this, and much progress has been made compared to the past. Approaches like 'Be quiet, you're a woman,' which ostracize women, have decreased, but in societies that cannot tolerate this, violence against women is very high. Unfortunately, we are among the leading countries in violence against women worldwide.”

## **“Rehabilitation centers should be established to prevent violence against women…”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan recalled that 8 women were killed in one day a while ago, stating: “It is a very sad situation. These are clinical cases. Alcohol is involved. It's not just about trying to fix incidents; preventive health is also needed. It's necessary to approach it from the perspective of protective mental health, to know why this person commits violence. It's not just laws being enacted worldwide to reduce femicides. Rehabilitation centers are also being established. In the world, a three-month mandatory stay is applied to rehabilitation centers. We could not establish such a rehabilitation center.”

## **“Woman-man equality in Turkey did not have a violence-reducing effect on women”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized the need for mediators in the family, saying: “Gaziantep Municipality did a very good study on this, called the Family Academy. There are legal experts there. Consultancies such as legal counseling, spiritual counseling, and psychological counseling were established. It is necessary to train educated mediators. This is a separate issue. Woman-man equality in Turkey did not have a violence-reducing effect on women.”

## **“Housewives waste their time watching TV series”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, stating, “Among the social problems of women that I currently observe are housewives wasting their time watching TV series… Spending time on various gossip programs and unnecessary programs. Evil is depicted in women's programs. This has three harms for the individual. First, it trivializes and normalizes evil. Second, it misleads innocent minds; children and adolescents, encouraging imitation and emulation. Third, enjoying watching bad things is a disease. It is sadomasochism… It makes the person both insensitive and malevolent…” noted, “Women should engage in association activities instead. They should engage in social responsibility activities. It would be much better if they did things like that. Women in Turkey are pathologically under the negative influence of women's programs.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan explained that working women do not watch such programs much or are interested in them because they are busy, concluding his words by saying: “I think it would be better for them to direct their time and energy towards doing something that will contribute to society, benefit humanity, and allow them to transcend themselves, rather than spending it on such programs.”
