In other words, yogurt can be a natural shield.” Emphasizing that natural and probiotic-rich yogurts should be preferred over sugar-added products, Prof. Dr. Atamer stated that fibrous nutrition, omega-3 sources, and regular exercise also provide a protective effect against colon cancer. Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer, Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Specialist at Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, provided information about the protective role of proper eating habits, especially yogurt, in reducing the risk of colon cancer. **Yogurt consumption can be protective against colon cancer! ** Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer stated that the relationship between gut health and nutrition has been extensively researched in the scientific world in recent years, adding, “Newly published studies have determined that yogurt consumption positively affects the gut microbiome and has protective effects against colon cancer.” Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer stated that in individuals consuming two servings of yogurt a day, especially in the part of the large intestine called the proximal colon, the risk of cancer was observed to decrease by 20 percent, and added, “Thanks to the probiotic bacteria in yogurt, especially lactobacillus and bifidobacterium species, they can balance the gut flora and suppress inflammation, preventing toxins from causing cell damage. Researchers state that these bacteria strengthen the intestinal mucosa, minimizing the harm from carcinogenic compounds. In other words, yogurt can be a natural shield.” **Yogurt: A powerful and protective food for gut health! ** Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer pointed out that yogurt is a rich source not only of probiotic bacteria but also of bioactive compounds and calcium, stating, “These also ensure the strengthening of the intestinal barrier, the enhancement of its functions, and the prevention of toxin absorption.” Therefore, Prof. Dr. Atamer stated that consuming fermented foods like yogurt can both suppress inflammation by maintaining the balance of the gut microbiota and reduce cancer risk in the long term, adding, “However, care must be taken in choosing yogurt. Natural and probiotic-rich products should be preferred over yogurts with added sugar or artificial additives.” **Nutrition is important to prevent colon cancer! ** Prof. Dr. Aytaç Atamer reminded that colon cancers rank third among gastrointestinal cancers, stating, “Nutrition is extremely important to prevent this.” Referring to the foods that should be included in the diet, Prof. Dr. Atamer concluded his words as follows: “It is beneficial to consume fibrous foods. High-fiber foods regulate digestion, cleanse the intestines, and help eliminate harmful substances from the body. Whole grains, oats, barley, wholemeal bread, and legumes fall into this group. In addition, fibrous foods have a protective effect against colon cancer. Vegetables such as broccoli and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are rich in antioxidants. These vegetables can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, chard, and arugula are rich in fiber and vitamins. These vegetables reduce inflammation in the body and strengthen the immune system. They are also rich in folate and can help prevent DNA damage. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, sardines, and walnuts, have anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 fatty acids also show a protective effect against cancer by reducing inflammation in the body. Fruits such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are rich in antioxidants. They have protective effects against cancer by preventing free radicals caused by oxidation from harming the body. Garlic also has protective effects against colon cancer. Furthermore, alcohol should be avoided, and regular exercise should be performed; these also have a protective effect against cancer.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66665](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.66665) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/yogurt-acts-as-a-natural-gut-shield*
