## Özet
'Home youth' phenomenon leads to young people withdrawing from social life and preferring to stay at home, a trend that has been increasing in Turkey in recent years, experts say.
## İçerik
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that the definition of 'home youth' encompasses not only unemployed or non-student young people but also those who are excessively drawn to the digital world and have shifted their social interactions to virtual environments. He said, "These young people generally state that the idea of 'being outside' triggers feelings of anxiety, fear of failure, or worthlessness." Aydın noted that while factors such as the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and societal pressure for success push young people towards introversion, the digital world creates a short-term escape.
Aydın emphasized that prolonged isolation can leave permanent marks on self-confidence and social skills.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın explained the psychological and societal reasons that lead young people to withdraw from social life and prefer to stay at home, as well as the consequences of this situation and its solutions.
**‘The idea of being outside’ triggers anxiety, fear of failure, and feelings of worthlessness!**
'Home youth' is fundamentally a concept used to define young people who have largely withdrawn from social, academic, or professional life, spending most of their days at home, stated Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, adding, "From a psychological perspective, this situation is characterized by social isolation, loss of motivation, and a decrease in self-efficacy belief."
Aydın noted that this phenomenon, called 'hikikomori' in Japan, is now noticeably increasing in Turkey as well. He said, "These young people generally state that the idea of 'being outside' triggers feelings of anxiety, fear of failure, or worthlessness. For this reason, home becomes a 'safe space'. However, in the long run, this safe space can unknowingly turn into a psychological trap."
**Youth sees the outside world as ‘a mirror of their inadequacies, not their opportunities’!**
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that the definition of 'home youth' encompasses not only unemployed or non-student young people but also those who are excessively drawn to the digital world and have shifted their social interactions to virtual environments. He explained, "Three important factors stand out in the increase of this situation in recent years. The pandemic period normalized staying at home. Our social interaction muscles weakened. Economic uncertainty strengthened the feeling of 'no matter what I do, it's useless' among young people. Societal pressure for success, especially exams, job search anxiety, and perfectionism, pushed some young people to withdraw."
Aydın stated that for many young people, the outside world now feels like 'a mirror of their inadequacies, not their opportunities', and thus introversion has become a type of emotional defense mechanism.
**Various factors can cause young people to stay at home! **
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, addressing the main reasons why a young person might prefer to stay at home for extended periods, said:
"Psychologically; anxiety disorders, depression, lack of self-confidence, and fear of failure come to the forefront. Especially young people with social anxiety perceive being in a community as a threat. For some young people, 'not starting at all rather than trying' feels safer. Furthermore, overly protective or critical parental attitudes make the individual's individuation process difficult. Factors such as unemployment, concern for livelihood, and inequality in educational opportunities drive young people into a feeling of helplessness. Social media and games provide short-term pleasure, postponing connection with real life. If a young person can be successful in the gaming world but feels inadequate at school or work, their mind naturally turns to the less threatening area, namely the virtual environment."
**Long-term staying at home also deactivates the brain's social interaction networks! **
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın emphasized that this situation could increase the risk of permanent social withdrawal or professional maladjustment in later ages, stating, "Research shows that prolonged social isolation can leave lasting marks on self-confidence, planning skills, and emotional resilience."
Referring to a study on 'hikikomori' in Japan, Aydın said, "It was found that a significant portion of these young people struggled to reintegrate into social life even in their 30s. A similar risk exists in Turkey. Long-term staying at home not only affects the social environment but also deactivates the brain's social interaction networks. This makes it difficult to adapt to work life, perform teamwork, or establish relationships in the future. In short, this situation is not 'laziness' but a state of psychological freezing that, if not addressed in time, can turn into a social and professional adjustment problem."
**Being a 'home youth' is not an end, it can be resolved when a helping hand is extended!**
Specialist Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın pointed out that families can make some mistakes during this process, stating, "Families can exert pressure with phrases like, 'You can't be this lazy,' or 'get a job, and you'll come to your senses.' Such approaches do not eliminate the reasons for the young person's withdrawal; on the contrary, they amplify feelings of shame."
Underlining that the correct approach is to try to understand why the young person is withdrawing and encourage them to take small social steps instead of forcing them, Aydın concluded his words as follows:
"Regarding psychological support, expert assistance can be sought. It should not be forgotten that being a 'home youth' is not an end, but a temporary stop that can be resolved when a helping hand is extended. A young person's re-engagement with social life is possible not through pressure, but through trust, understanding, and experiences of small successes."
