Persistent chronic pain in the knees can be debilitating. Neglecting it and underrating its severity can affect badly everyday life and health in general. Joint replacement with orthopaedic prostheses is performed when the pain is unbearable and there are no sufficient non-surgical treatments left.



**What Causes Knee Pain?**



Knee joint pain can be caused by minor injuries as well as by a ruptured ligament, a torn cartilage, or osteoarthritis, arthropathy, gout, infections and autoimmune conditions. When all possible conservative and minimal invasive variants of treatments have been tried, but there is no relief, an arthroscopic surgery, i.e. partial or total knee replacement, also known as a knee arthroplasty, can bring you to a life free of pain.



**When to Visit an Orthopaedic Specialist? **



If you experience persistent knee pain and stiffness while walking or doing everyday activities, or knee joint pain interrupts your sleep, it is highly recommended to visit an orthopaedic surgeon.



**What is a Knee Prosthesis?**



Knee prostheses are made of special hypoallergenic and safe materials (metal alloy caps and high density polyethylene being an excellent alternative to autogenous tissues) and aim at restoring knee joint motion and squashing joint inflammation.



**Knee Replacement Surgery Duration **



Generally knee replacement surgery takes two hours, in complex cases requiring a revision, it could last a bit longer.



**How Long to Stay in Turkey?**



Knee replacement surgery suggests about five days of hospitalisation and at least two weeks of post-operative follow-ups.   



**The Choice of Anaesthesia**



The surgery is performed in a well-equipped *JCI accredited* operating theatre under spinal or general anaesthesia, therefore, a patient does not experience any discomfort or pain. The factors determining the choice of anaesthesia will be evaluated by a specialist after a thorough physical examination and discussed with the patient.



**Getting Back to Normal Life after Knee Replacement**



Recovery usually takes several weeks. The overwhelming majority of people who undergo hip replacement surgery get back to normal activities within a few weeks or a month. 



**Why Is Rehabilitation Essential after Knee Replacement Surgery? **



Patients who work hard on physical therapy in general have a better chance to speed up the heeling process and faster return to normal life. Physical therapy and rehabilitation focuses on resuming firstly light activities followed by daily living independently.



**Recovery after Knee Replacement Surgery**



In early post-operative period a physiotherapist will teach you how to strengthen your knee quadriceps and use any walking aid such as crutches or a walker. Knee replacement recovery period requires avoiding heavy objects lifting for the first two weeks. 



**Weight Lifting after Knee Replacement Surgery**



Later, when the bone and the joint prosthesis have been melted together, the patient will be able to lift pretty much anything he or she can comfortably lift.



**Physical Activity after Knee Replacement Surgery**



A patient, who has undergone knee replacement, can usually walk on the same day after the surgery using crutches, in a week he or she can climb stairs. Depending on the speed of recovery patients can generally return to physical activity and driving in several weeks after knee prosthesis surgery.
