Under the leadership of Üsküdar University’s Health, Culture, and Sports Department, the “Digital Health Technologies and Artificial Intelligence” event was organized in collaboration with the Medical Technoscience Club and the Scientific Research Community Club. The event focused on digital applications in healthcare and the impact of artificial intelligence on these applications.

The event took place at Üsküdar University’s NP Health Campus in the Galenos Hall, with guest speaker Prof. Melih Bulut, a Pediatric Surgery Specialist and a graduate of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. Prof. Bulut shared his experiences with the future physicians in attendance.

Prof. Haydar Sur, Dean of Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine, also participated in the event.

Prof. Haydar Sur: “This is an infallible law of nature, just like the law of gravity.”

During his speech, Prof. Haydar Sur stated that “If you become doctors who appreciate the value of esteemed professors like Melih Hoca, the younger generation after you will also appreciate your value. The more you respect your elders, the more the next generations will respect you as you grow older. This is an infallible law of nature, just like the law of gravity. I appreciate your understanding of this and congratulate you.”

Attention drawn to potential solutions in digital health

Prof. Melih Bulut delivered a presentation titled “Innovation in Healthcare,” emphasizing the importance of innovation and digitalization in the healthcare sector. He addressed inefficiencies and challenges within health systems and stated that “There is approximately 20% waste in health systems. The hospital-centered and physician-centered service approach creates an obstacle to a holistic approach to health. This results in healthcare services being expensive, delayed, and prone to medical errors. For instance, in herniated disc cases, 10% of patients may suffer harm during the treatment process. Additionally, even issues related to hand hygiene among healthcare workers persist, leading to an increase in hospital infections.”

Highlighting potential solutions in digital health, Prof. Bulut pointed out that healthcare budgets are increasing, and data-driven medicine is becoming more prominent. Drawing from his own experiences, he also provided significant advice to future healthcare professionals.

Moreover, he emphasized that patients have expectations regarding protection, foresight, personalized medicine, participation, and uninterrupted service.

Prof. Melih Bulut: “Artificial intelligence can also bring ethical issues”

In his presentation, Prof. Bulut extensively discussed the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, its literacy, ethics, and its relationship with surgery. He stated:
“Although artificial intelligence has great potential in the healthcare sector, it can also bring ethical issues. The misuse of AI could lead to problems such as discrimination and bias. Therefore, AI developers and users must be conscious and utilize technology correctly and ethically. Incorporating AI education into curricula and raising awareness among healthcare professionals is a crucial topic.”

At the end of the program, Prof. Melih Bulut signed and gifted his book The Art of Speaking at Scientific and Medical Conferences through a raffle.
